... knows? There are so many avenues open to a chef with imagination. Could it be a bakery? For some reason all the wonderful bakeries which I remember from my youth have disappeared. I remember fondly going to the bakery on Collins Avenue and the smell of the baked goods and the beautiful shortbread cookies with cherries on top, or the shortbread cookie sandwiches with jam in the middle and dipped in chocolate ...

We had a lovely stay at the Crown and Mitre last night. What a lovely pub with rooms upstairs, cosy dining area and bar below, cheerful staff and a warm homely atmosphere. Arriving at the end of the day in these delightful old places tired, thirsty, grimy, with sore feet, is such a pleasure. I imagine how weary stage passengers a century ago must have felt as they pulled up at such places. A bath, a cold drink (unless ...

... detours ( my navigating is rubbish) but at least the weather was good. In fact the sun shone and it was hot, even at 600m. Once at the top we headed off along a ridge over Calf Crag, Gibson Knot and Helm Crag. The views were spectacular towards Grasmere but it was a hard walk. Most people chose the easier valley walk. We could see them all below like little ants walking in parallel with us along the river. We got ...

... long sleeves and a jacket all day. In fact, at bedtime it is 48 degrees with a high of 66 expected for tomorrow.

My kitchen whites are all pressed and I am looking forward to meeting Chef Hrishikesh Desai in the morning for my orientation and getting started on this phase of my education. More info on Chef Desai can be found on the Gilpin Hotel website.

    More to follow.
