Orange & Chateauneuf du Papes

We checked out of Le Cube early and drove up to Orange, where the primary thing to see is a restored Roman ampitheatre. I have uploaded a number of pictures. It sits smack dab in the middle of town and is very impressive. The basic structure has either been preserved or repaired, and some of the architectural details still remain. They still do live shows on the stage, which has presumably been built on top of whatever the original stage was. The pictures will show you the rough size and shap...

Side trip to Frejus

We weren't sure what to do today, so Erin got a couple of baguettes at a local boulangerie and we had that with some of the saucisson and olive tapanade for breakfast. Cheap and good. Most everything seems to be closed here on Sunday.

We finally decided to drive out to Fregus, where we read there are some Roman ruins and a Roman ampitheatre. When we got there, we found the ampitheatre right away. Of course, we arrived at 12:05 and the place was closed from 12 - 1:30, so we looked in fr...

... ride the train from Limoux to Marseille, which involves a couple transfers, then from Marseille there is an overnight bus that will take me right into Torino, where I'll meet my friend Carlo, and spend a couple days.

My simple train ride into Marseille turns into a series of missed connections and mis-communications. It somehow ends up taking five hours longer than I expected, and for the last stretch I just got on a train that I hadn't paid a ticket for. Note to ...

Amorous or Foolhardy?

... figured this out and got on the right boat - well, a different boat anyhow.

Driving onto the boat we followed the sign that said ‘Embarkments’. I love how so many words in French are similar to what we use in English, but with slightly different meaning. I certainly feel as though I am embarking on something this evening. Something completely new and unplanned - even to us who hardly do ...

NO Marseille for the Caswell's today!!

NO MARSEILLE for us!!! The captain went by when we had 21 foot waves and winds of 50 gusting to 65. It was sunny but not good enough to dock in Marseille, so on to Barcelona we go. In spite of it, we had a great relaxing day and i had a 3 hour nap this afternoon. Naps are totally not my thing but apparently i was exhausted from our whirlwind schedule. Anyway, nothing exciting. We have seen numerous people in arm slings and just ran into a woman in a ...

What a nice surprise

... believe our luck. It was so nice. Still, warm and crystal clear water on sandy beaches. We had a quick swim but knew we had to leave to get to Avignon on time. We then decided that if we found a campsite that was open we would stay. The first 2 we came to were closed and we were sad...but around at st clair beach one was open! Woo hoo!!!! 2 very happy girls. That night we played in the sand like kids ...

LOST & FOUND IN MARSEILLES- BLUE BALLS & ALL

... my traveler’s scurvy, so I’m feeling better internally, enlightened if not illuminated.

The only problem is WiFi. I change rooms but still no WiFi, even from a place that advertises it on the door, same with the café. This is getting frustrating. If you don’t have it, don’t advertise it. I really don’t want to have to badger anyone over it, but I’m running out of options ...

VISIONS OF MARSEILLES

... br>
Marseilles hotels are almost TOO cheap, but some close the doors early, and some are simply- I never thought I’d say this- below my standards. In France that means not only might there not be a shower attached to the room, but THERE MIGHT NOT BE ONE IN THE ENTIRE HOTEL. I’m not joking, and places that basic might be rare nowadays, but optional bath-for-a-charge is not. Maybe that will answer some longstanding questions for you. Now ...

It's been Toulon but it's worth it!!

... to the habour and this is when Toulon became Heather's favourite place as Jamie proposed!!!! Yes on one knee, in the habour, blue sea, gorgeous sunset I could go on.............. and if you had seen the state of me complete with bites and now sun burn I knew it must be love and said YES without hesitation!!! The ring Jamie got me unfortunately was far too big so we are ...

The longest ferry ride in the world

Right now its 10:30 PM and we just got off the f**ry and onto a bus. We landed in Toulon, France and driving to our original destination Nice. When our first f**ry broke down in the middle of the ocean, we w**e well on our way. We had to use the f**ries little trolling motor and crawl back to the Ajaccio port. We ask the Canadian couple what was going on as they spoke fluent French. We had to get on the only oth** f**ry leaving Ajaccio headed to Toulon. We got on the new ...
