Pseudo-Africa...but how can you not love it?

... to cut it quite as close as I do!

I have to say the ascent out of Johannesburg was probably one of the most turbulent and scary I have ever been on – lots of air pockets and swerving and banking – I thought I was going to die and was wondering if it had been a bad idea to rush to sneak in before the check in closed.

But, we did manage to make it to Cape Town and Eloise and her son Alex, who is in second grade, met us at the airport. I guess ...

Jam-packed journey

... Sunday morning time with the youth was really good, too. We continued further with the story of Moses, and the kids asked some demanding questions about God's purposes in the whole situation with Egypt. I was able to have a conversation with a few of the girls afterwards to help clarify a few things, and they seemed to understand a lot better afterwards, which was reassuring. I'm glad to be there to pick up on the little nuances of ...

... phase. We had just been traversing the quite coastal route so the only natural way to ease into big city life was by spending the weekend kicking back with a few cold beers and watching people go bye beneath us on Long Street from our hostel balcony. The second phase began with hunting down cars for sale within our price range...not much. We found a few specimens within our means and embarked on a tour of some of the city's more 'off the ...

... we hiked up the mountain, we could see that we were literally walking into a cloud. It ended up being really cool though, even though I definitely want to go back on a clear day so that I can see the views. You could see the cut off as you climbed from where you would be able to see the beaches below us and where the cloud began. As we got higher we were totally enveloped in the cloud. It was soo cool once the sun started setting because you could see ...

Cape Town - Finally!

... to be an ongoing state of renovation and repair. Duncan is sleeping in the garage loft that Darryl has recently partially completed. The room has a bank of windows with a stunning view, a bed on the floor, and pillars of candles - far too romantic for a 15 y.o. but Duncan appreciates it's uniqueness. He has to climb out the window and up and down a ladder propped against the outside wall to get into the house - navigating the ...

... penguins. They were funny just poking around and waddling. Rachel loved them. Interestingly, dogs are one of the predators of the South African penguin since they can't fly and are relegated to either waddling on land or swimming in water which is there only safe harbor against dogs that can't swim as fast. After this we went to the Peninsula and up to the top of the lighthouse tower. This was the Southwestern most point of South ...

Closing Thoughts

... learned is that Africans are people. They are not just 'Hunger Porn' images splashed on a TV screen. When I think back to so many of the Africans I've met on this trip, I have to smile: There was the young, hopeful couple I shared Tej with in Addis Ababa; the woman who handed me her baby on a bumpy matatu ride; Boniface, the Kenyan I met at the famous Mille Colline Hotel and who later showed me African 'Karaoke'; the fast and ...

Best Weekend Ever!

... into the room through the opening and my heart was racing and it was SO exciting! Once inside I just did a 360 degree turn to get a look at the room. I can't really explain what it was like...it was like being on another planet, not like your underwater but maybe out in space. There was rust and kelp all over the walls and sand covered the floor and just the knowledge that you are in a room that was once part of the gigantic ship just next to it and has been ...

Happy New Years

... further south and much further west at Cape Agulhas but who is counting?) Besides, the Cape of Good Hope sounds alot more romantic. On the way back we ran into a pack of baboons who commandeered a few tourist's cars as well as took in the view from Chapman's drive along a windy coastal road. It was along that road that JP swore he saw whales but alas, I believe what he saw were underwater rocks or reefs as it was the wrong season for whale watching.
