    Doughton Park Hike

... put the distance we had hiked in perspective. After the saddle, it pretty much was all downhill following Flat Rock Ridge Trail back to the bottom. As we approached the end, the sounds of cars and motorcycles on Long Bottom Road and flowing water along Basin Creek indicated our hike was almost complete. In the end, it took about 8 hours to complete our 17-mile hike. Not bad, considering the distance and elevation gain.

... parking anywhere on this road is now prohibited (and strictly enforced by state troopers and sheriff’s deputies I understand, although not from experience). So we parked at the picnic area at Price Park and hiked to the falls along Boone Fork Trail. The entire trail makes a five-mile loop, but we were just hiking the first 1.5 miles to the falls and back. Initially, the trail goes through ...

... ski valley, through trees, over creeks, over a lake, above the tree canopy and through the woods. It was the most awesome way to see the seven devil valley, 200 ft in the air birds eye view at 50mph. So we purchased our goofy zipping photos and drove to Grandfather ...

The blue ridge parkway. I love this soulful winding road. It cuts through the heart of the South, through the mountainous territory of the most homely and breathtaking part of the country. And it brings me home somehow no matter how far I have roamed. In the middle of this US portion of the journey to visit all the Church St. ...

... Carolina. During the afternoon we stopped at Doughton Park for tea from our newly bought flask. We made it to Boone this evening without spending a cent.

Our motel tonight is only $50.. our cheapest night in the states so far. Probably considered 'run down' compared to most places here, but its still a nicer more equipped room than all the places we stayed at in South America, so no complaints.

A great drive today. All good so far!
