On to Moncton

Monday, September 7 – To Moncton N.B.... Following an early "continental" breakfast, whose sole merit was that it was free but still way too dear, we were on the road again. At Riviere-du-Loup the Trans Canada Highway dives to the south east and, symbolic perhaps for the disdain of Quebec for the impoverished economy of New Brunswick, becomes a two lane highway virtually all the way to Edmundston. After a thousand kilometers of divided highway driving where staying in visual sight of ea...

... to the Maritimes and turned it into a B&B with an attached tea house. We were somewhat amused by the state of the home, obviously suffering a little from old age. It was getting to be slightly unlevel, and when you walked from one room to the other, you ‘climbed’ going one direction and ‘ran downhill’ going the other (slight exaggeration). However, a very good host and an excellent cook with a lot of home made fare to offer.

Went for a brisk walk ...

Three provinces; one day

The original plan was to take the bus from Charlottetown to Amherst, rent a car there & drive about for a few hours prior to the train’s departure late in the afternoon. However, the thought of getting up at 5:30 to catch the bus & carrying a boxed breakfast plus going through the hassle of taking a taxi to the bus depot & dealing with luggage on and off the bus as well as in and out ...

Day 22 - Moncton NB - Portland ,Maine

After saying a very tearful good by to Bob at the Halifax airport we have begun this new chapter of our journey. At first I just wanted to be by myself up there in the cockpit to wallow in my self-pity however I could see that the kids were just as bad off as I so I know one of them was up there with me - I think Morgan - It was kind of a blur ! I put on some music that Bob would have chosen and wasn't sure if it would make us feel better or worse but I think it made us feel ...

Moncton - Hopewell Rocks

... may have to come home with me as he is so cute. The bugs however, were the worst ever. We could not sit outside at all. We ended up putting out the fire and going to bed. No wonder we were the only tent on the grounds. Everyone else was watching TV in their RVs around 8pm which I found very odd. Now I know why!! Definitely the worst place so far. And I havent had a Timmies since Riviere du Loup. I may be slightly more cranky than usual but this is ridiculous!!

Rocks 'n stuff

Spent the morning doing the tourist thing - went to an Acadian museum, visitors' centre, etc. The most eventful part of today was a short afternoon drive from Moncton to Hopewell Rocks, which is in (on? near?) the Bay of Fundy, the site of the highest tides in the world. It was actually quite a hike to get from the visitors' centre to the flowerpot rock formations, but definitely worth it to see ...

... are currently cutting down their staff and encouraging self check-in, I suppose it might also have been reasonable to expect that the check-in lines might have been long. They weren't. So, we were at the departure gate within about 20 minutes of arriving at the airport, and had over 2h to wait. But, as my mother said, better to be laughing at how early you are than crying because you missed your flight. Got into ...

... told me we could pay by card. What? I asked her how much the toll actually was. $39 she replied. WHAT! FOR A TOLL. THE FERRY IS FREE TO ENTER, BUT TO LEAVE YOU HAVE TO PAY $39! On second thought, I could actually stay here in PEI and never leave! Across the 13km bridge and arrived in New Brunswick. We headed to Moncton, a big university town. We could not find any accommodation, but one of the B&B ...

... overcast instead of sunny and warm. I headed down to Witless Bay for some whale & bird watching. It was a great boat ride and I got to see some humpback whales and a whole mess of puffins. For those of you who laughed at my whale pictures from Vancouver island these ones will definitely be better. I also poked around the archeological dig going on at Ferryland where the Colony of Avalon ...
