Slept here in a church parking lot. Packs of dogs roam the street. At 10:30 last night there were packs of kids roaming around...young kids...not even teenagers. The "Gus stop" was the center of the town. It's the gas station. Covered in garbage. Despite what the website says, the women's room was not clean.... Very very not clean. I have no idea why it's open late on the 9th of every ...

A campground on a corner of a working ranch

... what folks who live in the area do for news, and she told me they listen to the radio.

Obviously the owner of this ranch had a good idea for a low-maintenance ongoing revenue stream. Smart!

We left early the next morning with all the other overnighters. Guess no one had a reason to be in Valentine, NE!

They weren't forecasting any storms for 5 days so we decided to drive over 300 miles north to Nebraska to see the Greater Prairie-chicken display on their Lek, this amazing spectacle only happens for a few weeks in Spring so we had to give it a go. We headed to Valentine which is north of the refuge to make some enquiries, we booked the blind and looked forward to our ...

In Valentine For Bull Bash!

... it was hind end first. Whew! My credibility was upheld!

Enjoyed dropping in to the gun show associated with Bull Bash. Met a bright young couple who moved here from a faraway state for teaching jobs and because they wanted that unique and wonderful rural lifestyle. So inspired to meet people like that, who are living purposefully and making such good choices!

After a full day, we headed out of town after another highly successful Bull Bash event.

... It’s a burden, but, you know, we will do our job. Old Mr Henry has impressed on us the need for data to test his theory that people living through brutal winters are taciturn to prevent loss of body heat through the mouth opening. What can I say about the pater’s theory? It’s cold, but Mrs Henry certainly hasn’t acted to preserve her body heat, chatting away as if she were lolling about pool-side in the grounds of a Bali hotel.
