Historical Traveler Reviews Holiday Inn Express Hotel & Suites - Marina

New, clean, good value

from

New, clean, modern, good sized rooms. Good value for < $100.

The only downsides are the soundproofing, which seems to be absent, and Marina itself which seems to be a half-abandoned military facility. Fortunately Monterey is only moments away...

We were recommended a restaurant ("Dishes"?) by the front desk which was pretty poor - cold soup, plastic-cloth-covered tables in a barn. You might do better looking for restaurants in Monterey than Marina.

$$$ for your money

from

After seeing $$$ prices for Monterey Hotels, I decided to stay here. I was worried about the drive to Monterey but it's less than 10 minutes away and you cannot beat the price. Walls may have been thin but isn't that usually the case. The hotel was very clean, room spacious, and staff helpful. Would stay here again.

Very Disappointed

from

Very disappointed in our stay in Marina. The room was nothing like the picture on the web sight. But was clean. The walls very thin could here everything going on. Air conditioning unit ran all night long. For $179 per night was very disappointed in this property.

Nice, newer hotel. But needs better soundproofing.

from

I found this hotel through the CVB and got a pretty good rate with them.

The hotel is conveniently located just off Hwy 1. The traffic noise is mainly from local traffic. The construction on this hotel is new and lacks soundproofing in the walls. Be warned...do not accept rooms on the lower (basement) floor. You will likely get all of the noise from the lobby and breakfast area starting at 5am.

The staff and manager were very friendly. The rooms are beautifully decorated and the spa is very nicely done too.

Also, there is no pool. I liked the breakfast, it is one of the best I have had at hotels. The fruit at the front desk is very fresh and a great snack for your travels in Monterey.

Wonderful hotel!

from

We had an enjoyable 2 night stay at this very new, very clean and large room hotel. What a find as it is only 10 minutes from the Monterey Fisherman's Wharf at half the cost of a Monterey hotel! The hotel staff were very friendly, the continental breakfast room was lovely and spacious and the laundry room was right next to the lobby. We would highly recommend this hotel!

Excellent stay

from

I had an excellent stay at the hotel on 29 January 2004. It is almost new, clean, nicely appointed, and had free internet access. Staff was particularly helpful with directions, maps and restaurant recommendations. I also had problems accessing the internet initially.

They promptly diagosed the problem and let me borrow a connection cable that worked. I would stay here again without question.

Loved the Holiday Inn Express

from

What a wonderful hotel! Our guestroom was brand new and beautiful. Our stay included free coffee, high speed internet iconnection, hairdryer, iron, and a wonderful breakfast. The staff was so friendly and helpful.

Great!@

from

I am a Government employee and stay here just about every week. It's probably one of the best Holiday Inn Express I have stayed in and the rooms new, clean and have free high speed connectivity.

Service was horrible

from

This hotel was horrible! When I had arrived, I was given a room that was already used. Then when I requested another room, they told me that they were all booked and they didn't have one. There was no extra effort taken by the hotel to accomodate me. Then after some more prodding, the receptionist realized that there was another room available for me to use. Plus I had reserved a suite. The suite turned out to be a guestroom with a couch. The only thing good at this hotel was the express breakfast. Other than that, this place is not worth your money or your time. I will never stay there again!

Great new hotel

from

This is a new hotel with realy nice furnishings and landscaping. Yes, it a few min. from downtown Monterey and Carmel but it feels so nice being away from the traffic.

the sate beach is within walking distance and a good jogging path circles the lake just accross the street.

My rating is that this is a good bet for when the downtown hotels are crowded or priced too high.

Good staff, clean rooms with tripple sheeted beds!

... memorabilia and history of Steinbeck and his work. I'm adding some of his books to my to-read list after our visit. What an interesting and talented man he was. We also drove through Monterey and checked out Fisherman's Wharf and the Cannery, both settings in Steinbeck's writing. The sunshine greeted us the next morning, and we were off on a drive along scenic Route 1 to Big Sur. Motoring down the highway we discovered panoramic scenery--rocky ...

... Pot experience. We had lots of things to try, and the meat was cooked right on our table on a grill. I had the salmon, and it was probably the best salmon that I have ever had, and Evie had galbi (a type of steak). The service was absolutely amazing; we were checked on by at least 5 different people, but it wasn’t intrusive at all.

We originally planned to go to a German restaurant named Stammtisch for dinner, but we were running late, ...

... after an hour of blowing and suffering from only minor smoke related injuries we managed to get a small fire started.

As we used a flamed tortilla chip to light the stove gas, we then realised that the stove was also having issues. So I had to keep the fire going for a while longer whilst Ben worked hard to get the stove started. eventually we were successful and food was in the pan being warmed through. After all this was done, we ...

First night of camping

... after an uncomfortable and chilly night it quickly becomes clear that we need to pop to a camping goods store to upgrade some of our kit. (I discover to my excitement that fleecy sleeping bag liners are an option!)

The following day we drive along the breath taking piece of wiggly costal road leading us towards LA stopping off to take in amazing cliff top views including a waterfall pouring out of the rock directly into the ...

... still pretty big. There was a fair bit of jousting going on between some young bulls on the beach and in the surf. They also were a bit smelly.

As we continued the drive south I was somewhat surprised to see about a dozen zebras in a field at the side of the road.

The hotel in Santa Maria is just off the freeway so was easy to find.

Went to the cinema after tea to watch The Heat, which was daft but really made all 3 of us laugh out ...
