The phone rang at 7am from the automatic wakeup call that I accidently set last night. I got up and had the longest shower of my life. By the time I got out, it was about time to wake up and Tim and Ainsley so that they could get ready. We met Nanny, Poppy and Aunty Judy down at the buffet breakfast. It was actually really gross so we didn't eat …
We've been incommunicado for a few days as Monday we drove the beautiful, but remote Big Sur. Not much talking going on between us as we just sat in awe of the most spectacular views of the coast around every corner. To be honest, it was all a bit too much to take in really - like some Michael Bay movie. The Pacific Coast Highway follows the sea cliffs high above the ocean, twisting and turning in line ...
Today we arrived at Marina and at last we have our beach site. We have a walk down onto Marina dunes, the mist is eery and the waves are crashing in, it is beautiful but there will be no swimming here. Liz and I decided to take bread with us for the birds and we end up in a scene from the film of the same name. It starts off a bit chilly but by the time we have finished our trek we are sweating and the sand is so soft it ...
... have liked to spend all day there dipping our toes in the pool and lording it up in the archways, we discovered that it was free to park if we were less than an hour and $15 there after and them embarked upon a race against time so we could up hold our true British skinflintery and pay nothing at all. Off we sprinted, (well Dan sprinted, I sort of skuttled and wheezed), to the tram with 13 minutes to spare. Once on said tram ...
First we were in Solvang which is a wonderful Danish town and near Buellton that is the home of the original Anderson's Split Pea Soup Restaurant (dad says it's better than the one in Santa Nella). Mom and dad did a lot of sightseeing and some wine tasting (imagine that!) at two of the local wineries. Another local eatery that was very good was Mother Hubbard's Restaurant (YELP gives them very good ratings also). Then it was off to Pismo Beach. Only one night here but the folks ...

Historical Traveler Reviews Holiday Inn Express Hotel & Suites - Marina
New, clean, good value
New, clean, modern, good sized rooms. Good value for < $100.
The only downsides are the soundproofing, which seems to be absent, and Marina itself which seems to be a half-abandoned military facility. Fortunately Monterey is only moments away...
We were recommended a restaurant ("Dishes"?) by the front desk which was pretty poor - cold soup, plastic-cloth-covered tables in a barn. You might do better looking for restaurants in Monterey than Marina.
$$$ for your money
After seeing $$$ prices for Monterey Hotels, I decided to stay here. I was worried about the drive to Monterey but it's less than 10 minutes away and you cannot beat the price. Walls may have been thin but isn't that usually the case. The hotel was very clean, room spacious, and staff helpful. Would stay here again.
Very disappointed in our stay in Marina. The room was nothing like the picture on the web sight. But was clean. The walls very thin could here everything going on. Air conditioning unit ran all night long. For $179 per night was very disappointed in this property.
Nice, newer hotel. But needs better soundproofing.
I found this hotel through the CVB and got a pretty good rate with them.
The hotel is conveniently located just off Hwy 1. The traffic noise is mainly from local traffic. The construction on this hotel is new and lacks soundproofing in the walls. Be warned...do not accept rooms on the lower (basement) floor. You will likely get all of the noise from the lobby and breakfast area starting at 5am.
The staff and manager were very friendly. The rooms are beautifully decorated and the spa is very nicely done too.
Also, there is no pool. I liked the breakfast, it is one of the best I have had at hotels. The fruit at the front desk is very fresh and a great snack for your travels in Monterey.
We had an enjoyable 2 night stay at this very new, very clean and large room hotel. What a find as it is only 10 minutes from the Monterey Fisherman's Wharf at half the cost of a Monterey hotel! The hotel staff were very friendly, the continental breakfast room was lovely and spacious and the laundry room was right next to the lobby. We would highly recommend this hotel!
I had an excellent stay at the hotel on 29 January 2004. It is almost new, clean, nicely appointed, and had free internet access. Staff was particularly helpful with directions, maps and restaurant recommendations. I also had problems accessing the internet initially.
They promptly diagosed the problem and let me borrow a connection cable that worked. I would stay here again without question.
Loved the Holiday Inn Express
What a wonderful hotel! Our guestroom was brand new and beautiful. Our stay included free coffee, high speed internet iconnection, hairdryer, iron, and a wonderful breakfast. The staff was so friendly and helpful.
I am a Government employee and stay here just about every week. It's probably one of the best Holiday Inn Express I have stayed in and the rooms new, clean and have free high speed connectivity.
Service was horrible
This hotel was horrible! When I had arrived, I was given a room that was already used. Then when I requested another room, they told me that they were all booked and they didn't have one. There was no extra effort taken by the hotel to accomodate me. Then after some more prodding, the receptionist realized that there was another room available for me to use. Plus I had reserved a suite. The suite turned out to be a guestroom with a couch. The only thing good at this hotel was the express breakfast. Other than that, this place is not worth your money or your time. I will never stay there again!
Great new hotel
This is a new hotel with realy nice furnishings and landscaping. Yes, it a few min. from downtown Monterey and Carmel but it feels so nice being away from the traffic.
the sate beach is within walking distance and a good jogging path circles the lake just accross the street.
My rating is that this is a good bet for when the downtown hotels are crowded or priced too high.
Good staff, clean rooms with tripple sheeted beds!
