Historical Traveler Reviews Holiday Inn Destin on the Beach

A great place to stay

from

This was my families first trip to Destin and the Holiday Inn Destin was a great place to stay. The room was very comfortable and by the letter in the room they were just refurbished. The hotel is right on the beach and it was great to just walk out of the room and be on the beach in about a minute. We stayed on the first floor in a room without an ocean view but didn't miss it. The indoor pool and hot tub was a great hit with the kids. The beach is awesome, just don't forget the sunscreen and get burned like I did. We ate in the lounge and the food was pretty good. It was the regular hamburger type food but good. The best part is that children under 12 eat free. They even got a push up pop for dessert. I definately recommend this hotel. The hotel was good and the service was excellent and the people friendly. They even recomended a restaurant for dinner one night.

Nice Holiday Inn on the Beach

from

This hotel is your standard large Holiday Inn and is located right on a great section of the beach. I've stayed at this hotel about 10 times so I can give you a pretty good overview.

The hotel rooms are divided into two sections. One is the "round tower" with a center round hallway around the elevators and rooms that surround that. Unfortually since it's round, not all the rooms have a great view of the ocean. The other section of rooms is a block that runs perpendicular to the beach. At the end of the unit are rooms that overlook the beach.

Average room costs is from $80/night to $250/night. Expect to pay at least $160+ per night to get a view of the ocean. The ones at the end of the block unit with a balcony overlooking the beach are about $250/night (for that you can get a 2-3br condo in destin). Note that this hotel usually requres a 72 hour cancelation policy since they are in a "resort area"

The rooms are what you would expect from a standard Holiday Inn.

Nothing fancy but adequate for most people. There is a room safe in the closet area of each room if you need to lock up wallet, etc., but I've never had anything stolen in my many visits there.

They hotel has two pools, one outdoor and one indoor. The indoor one is set up like a "Holidome" with hot tub, arcade games, gift shop, etc.

Just as in most Holidomes, it can get a little noisey with all the excited kids, so don't get a room directly on this if this is an issue.

They have a restaurant with a good breakfast including a buffett. (I've never eaten dinner there since Destin has so many great restaurants).

There is a snack bar outside going to the beach. The hotel also has a nice bar area, but for some reason it's hardly open. every time we've gone done there at night they've already closed it.

The beach is great. Great water, great sand, nice waves. They have a boarded walkway over the dunes to it's easy to get to. You can rent chairs/umbrellas from the chair service for about $10/chair per day.

They also reserve it for the entire day if you leave and need to come back.

Restaurants are great in this area. Some are walking distance but most are a quick 5 minute drive. There is a "Chick-fila" (fast food) across the street. Grocery stores, shopping, Wal-mart are all a quick drive.

There is a very nice and large outlet mall about a 10 minute drive down the beach by-pass road.

Bottom line is that there are not many hotels in Destin and very few that are actually on the beach. Most of Destin is covered up on Condo towers. So if you want a hotel on the beach, this is one of your few choices.

Join the Priority Club and you might get a room upgrade or at least a free newspaper (which they seemed to run out of quickly).

Would I stay here again? heck yes. Especially if it was for a quick trip. If you are going for a week though and taking kids or getting more than one room, you can get a better deal by getting a condo which has a living room and a kitchen, and the kids will have just as much fun at the beach.

Sun in FL panhandle

This hotel has got it going. Excellent location, great place for children, two pools, they load you up with towels and if that isn't enough you can get more by the indoor pool. The rooms are nice with summer scene pictures and fancy frames on everything. Activities for kids are first rate!! The only shortcoming was the ice machines were slow or out of ice and the hotel restaraunt food was medium. Menu limited and food just OK. I thought the room rate sounded high but for what we got it was fair. Would go back.

Great Place to stay

from

I been reading these reviews and can't understand what everyone else is talking about. We can't be talking about the same place. I been comming to the Holiday Inn Destin (the one with the round building) for the last few years and i have never found another great Place like this.

The Kids Program is terriffic, all the Staff is just Great, always willing to help and make your vacation a very relaxing stay. My Room always get cleaned real good.( i would like a mint on my pillow though LOL) And when i have a problem it gets taking care of right away. I would recommend this place to everyone.

Yuck

from

We expected better service for a $170/night room. The room smelled like ***. Ever heard of Air Freshners? They hardly put towels in the bathroom...But they put a bunch of the little ones. I can't dry my *** with a sq ft of cloth. The staff was not too friendly. The food in the restaurant was too expensive and gross. The bedspreads and sheets needed some Downy. They smelled like cigars and booze. The old lady in the gift shop sold us a boogy board that was too expensive. The maids showed up too late to clean the rooms. It was like 4 p.m. and my room was not clean. We expect better service from a holiday Inn.

Toilet won't work, management doesn't care.

from

We stayed here Saturday, June 7 2003. We checked in to our "holidome" room (never figured out what the heck that was) to find our "balcony" overlooked the children's club area and the indoor pool. VERY noisy. The room had a stale odor and very worn looking bedspreads. The first of our family to use the bathroom found that the toilet wouldn't flush. Maintenence came up with a plumbers helper and got it working for a little while. This happened two more times during our one-night stay. Maintenence insinuated that we had tried to flush something "inappropriate". At check-out, we reminded the manager of our problems and he tried to pretend he didn't know about it. (We had spoken to him twice on the phone) He finally took 10 percent off our bill but that did not nearly make up for our inconvenience. We will NOT stay here again. I've had better stays at Super 8.

Kid's Program Staff is Great!!!!!

from

I stayed at the Holiday Inn Destin over the Memorial Day Holiday Weekend 2003. May 23-26I traveled with my three children alone. I got lost on the way in and "Bill" one of the managers gave me directions in to Destin from Pensacola. "Bill" was very helpful and gave me directions home that cut my drive time by three hours. The kids program was great and my kids really enjoyed the ice cream party and the magic show with the Elvis clown. The kids enjoyed the activities center and the staff was very helpful and indulgent to my children because it so clear that I was very ill.My husband has been deployed and we did not get a military discount on our room but the kids cant wait to go back and take their Dad. I would say that most of the staff was very pleasant but some of the personnel in the resturant were less than helpful when I wanted a take-out dinner and the gift shop always smelled like cigarette smoke and one mature woman working in the gift shop was a little rude. But overall, the kids didn't notice those things and had a great time and we are going again this summer.

Unfriendly Manager-Poor Customer Service

from

We stayed at this hotel and had a good experience--other than the fact that the kids activity room was closed this particular weekend--much to our children's disappointment--but the stinger was when we were frolicking at the pool and the activity room was filled with children. When my children wanted to play, we were told the activity center wasn't open--it was being used by some friends of the hotel manager. We planned on returning to the hotel--I am a writer and had an article to work on in the area. I was excited to see that The Holiday Inn advertised a armed forces discount (my husband is in the ARMY)--when I inquired about the discount--the Manager, Mr. Farley told me that the discount was only for the soldiers returning from or heading to Iraq. He was VERY rude. My husband does a lot (just as other soldiers in the US) to support the conflict in Iraq and this MGR. acted as though we were entitled to a military discount because my husband wasn't over in Iraq. The manager flat out said he wasn't offering that discount at his hotel. When I contacted 1-800-Holiday they told me the discount was for ALL military families. I expressed to the administration that I wanted to file a complaint becasue of how ugly the Mgr acted, as of yet (and it has been a month) I have not been contacted at all. I found the Manager to be very offensive and not at all interested in even being polite to customer inquiries. When I was speaking to him on the telephone he kept sighing heavily and blowing his breath out. I expected a lot more from a Manager.

Excellent

from

This Holiday Inn was Excellent. It was very clean, the staff was very friendly, it did not smell like a hotel, there were not a lot of kids running around, there was security every night and it is in a great location. I would suggest this hotel to anyone.

Stayed @ Holiday Inn (Holidome) was wonderful. A group of us (4) first time to Floriday we decided on Destin, Fl 10/01. Now my daughter and I are going this year. I missed going in 2002, but won't miss going a year again

I hope to post pictures as we go starting with the next ...

The #1 Beach in the USA, the Mezes and Johnson

Despite our abysmal trip through Alligator Alley we had a lovely drive as we headed north out of Florida. Once on the gulf coast Lew and I decided to stop at Siesta Key. The key is proudly adorned with signs proclaiming it the #1 Beach in the USA. It was quite beautiful, but none of the beaches were dog friendly. That leaves it's rankings far below the #1 ranking it boasts, but I'll post photos and allow you to decide for yourself.

Sleep for little miss was kind of a mess, the first two hours she slept the majority of, but other than that sleep came in about 30 minute increments the rest of the 12 hour drive home. We all made it home in one piece but there were parts of it that got a bit hairy. Between toys, cell phones (in which unnecessary groupons were accidentally ordered, lol!), laptops and a little bit ...

They take your family's picture when you board and sell them at the end, but everything else including beer, wine, soda and water to drink, crackers to feed the local sea gulls, even a chance to drive the boat for kids (little miss was far to young at the time for that) is included in your admission price. Its an absolutely amazing way to see the harbor, the gulf and the bay in two hours time!
