Hi all We had a 6.15am wake up call and a great breakfast. Jackie as usual was a little slow moving - being an afternoon person etc. Todays travel was from Lake Lucerne to Cologne, Germany. A distance of some 500kms. When we left the weather was fine and before long we were on the Autobahn. After 1.5 hours we had a 30 minute break at a very clean road house. Since coming into Austria the road houses have been extra clean. During the travel the countryside was lovely with many small village. J...

... which was nice because typically we don't exchange more than 2 sentences in a day. Sitting down with all of the "members" of the household is always a fun lingual experience. Carla speaks Italian to me and I speak English back, yet we typically understand each other fine. Isidoro speaks to me in several languages and I only understand him when he speaks in German but I still have a hard time responding in anything but ...

Düsseldorf, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany cariverga... or some other negative topic.
Westport is a small town, so we spent a lot of time just soaking up the atmosphere--taking long walks through the town, along the coast, or through the fields. We spent a day climbing the local mountain, Croagh Patrick. Like almost everything around the town, Croagh Patrick is a pilgrimage site. Every year, thousands of Catholics climb the mountain bare-footed to reach the church that lays on its peak. The ascent is mostly sharp ...
Another early start for our walking tour of Cologne. We started at the ship and walked through the Old Town to the cathedral. The Old Town isn’t really old. It was completely destroyed during WWII. It was slowly rebuilt to look like the original. The cathedral was badly damaged during the bombing but the structure remained standing. The construction of the cathedral was started in 1248 but not finished until 1880. At ...

After our Rhine cruise we drove in the coach to Koln (Cologne). Cologne is well-known for a few things, including perfume (4711 in particular), its Roman origins (as a colony – hence the name) and for its twin spired Gothic cathedral. We stopped for a little over an hour in the main square.
The cathedral houses the bones of the three Magi ...

Cologne, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany cariverga... 4 hours to kill so dumped our new back-breakers in the lockers and set off to see what we could find. We found very little. The 'Midi' area seems to be roughly comparible to Croydon, in the sense that it has trams, and a sky-scraper, and isn't very close to anything very interesting. It was hot though, so after a fruitless hour wandering past computer shops and not a lot else we went ...
Cologne, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany danandsarah... and is probably one of the sweetest dogs I have ever met. Extremely shy, Tessa is comfortable sniffing your hand but gets timid when you try to pet her too much. Therefore, Steve and I are very careful when she comes around so that we don't scare her away. One time I was sitting on the patio during one of her visits and neither one of us knew the other one was there. When she saw me, she barked. When I saw her, I screamed. She ran away and I spilled coffee all over myself ...
Cologne, Germany petrest... I'm taking a chance that I don't get run over a bicycle, get lost, get hit by a train, or get kicked out of a bakery (just to name a few!). I've come to accept the fact that change is inevitable no matter where you are. And to my great surprise...I have really come to embrace it. I look forward to new adventures now and every day I wonder what's going to happen next. Because as I've learned along the way, "Life is like a box of chocolates...you never know what you're going to get!"
