Tonight is our third night in Caen and as I write there is a huge fireworks display in the hippodrome park across the street from our hotel. This huge park/race track dates back to Roman days. It is very large. The City of Caen is wonderful. It has a canal running through it which makes me feel at home. The buildings are almost entirely made of stone and or concrete and the streets are very narrow and cobble stone covered in places. Roundabouts are all over as well. Bastille Day is a big day ...

... steep to get down to the shore, it’s hard to imagine how difficult the soldiers had it. Seeing the sight at Omaha Beach really made me feel proud to be an American. After the beach, we drove onward to Saint-Malo, which is on the coast, and is a walled city. We stayed at a cute little hotel, similar to a B&B and had dinner at a nice restaurant, too bad I ordered my steak too rare…
Caen, Normandy, France liz.swind... at each scene on the tapestry. Without it you would find it hard to depicher the story and miss the little details which bought the tapestry to life.
The town of Bayeux itself is gorgeous and miracouslouly escaped WWII bombing...even though it was only 10km inland from the D-Day beaches
Bayeux, Normandy, France darrenhough74We had a busy day ahead so we set our alarm for 7am as its still dark at that time and so getting out of bed early has not been easy. I woke to the smell of coffee brewing and scrambled eggs in bed. The deal is I drive and Kim cooks.

After breakfast we walked over to the beach and on this beautiful sunny morning we found it hard to imagine the blood shed that occurred in 1944. From ...
Arromanches-les-Bains, Normandy, France darrenhough74Arrived at Ouistreham just before dark and found an Aire de Service right on the beach and this time it was free! The downside was it was right next to the ferry terminal and the 6am ferry to Portmouth the next day was kill the tranquilo the next morning. Kim's Maison du Scooby cooked up a storm. Pork fajitas on rice - delicious. I gave it 5 stars.
Ouistreham, Normandy, France darrenhough74The trip to Normandy was a lot to absorb. It's hard to believe, that my grandfather Kelly was there on D-Day over 60 years ago.I certainly do not think I would have survived. I am thankful he did, I wouldn't be here. Nor my mother and her siblings, my sisters, or my nieces. His sacrifice has not only affected the existence of my own life, but the daily lives ...
Bayeux, Normandy, France lolly13... at those beaches because they were the ones that I was most interested in but more of a factor was the day is only so long and I could have spent a day at each beach going to the museums and reading the courageous stories of the brave Allied service men and women.

Well we have erased most of the spiritual healing we received at Mt-St-Michel and while it is depressing to think of all of the lives lost the main emotion is pride. We keep driving to Caen on our way to Paris.
Caen, Normandy, France moore_mattj... were sent in to take that fortification. They had some trouble, and they had to claw their way up the cliff to do it, but they finally were able to take it over and eliminate that threat to the two big beaches. The Pointe looks much the same today as it must have looked a few months after the battle. The ground is absolutely pockmarked with craters from aerial bombardment. Giant slabs of concrete from broken up bunkers have been displaced ...
Caen, France dyer0930... some of these photos were taken from (note: on this hill where the theater was, is also the white angel statue that is seen in the WWII film, "The Longest Day"). We had lunch here and saw some WWII cannons and tanks. This was also the site of an artificial harbor that was constructed during the war. To this day, some of the planks and outline of the harbor still exist. Now, the beautiful day started to rain. We drove about 20 minutes to the American ...
Caen, Normandy, France davidofcali... instead of using the automatic train ticket machine). I 'happened' to end up at Jean-Marc's wicket. And, after hearing my story of how I was now on my own, and not going to Italy, and my vague plan for touring around Normandy, he proceeded to organize an itinerary for me for a whirlwind visit through Normandy, arranging the timetable, coordinating all the trains, and booking the hotels. I will go to the tall ship armada in ...
