Well after several hours travelling I finally arrived in Chicago. Have an incredible view from my room, which is also very nice ;-) Very tired but got dinner and drinks to enjoy before sleep. City tour tomorrow should be great ;-) My tour group: I am the youngest. Next youngest is prob late 30s and goes up to late 60s! All very friendly chatty …
After a long flight, a little dazed we picked up our Nissan. I bit the bullet and drove first, I was a little nervous about driving on the right hand side but once i got in the car it was fine. Making our way out of the airport I was thankful there was traffic as it gave me time to get used to driving and figure out where we were going. Along with …
The day started with a change of plan. We had intended to catch the EL across town, but opted to walk instead as we were searching for a coffee. Most of our walked followed the Loop anyway, but revealed a hidden world underneath the railway lines. We stopped for coffee opposite Grant Park and the end of the park to visit the Field Museum. This …
The view from the aeroplane approaching Chicago was very promising. Glimmering high rise towers and a blue lake so big it could be mistaken for the sea; it was an alluring prospect for our first taste of the United States of America. Passport control took forever to clear as there were far too few staff to process the compliment from a Boeing 777 …
Chicago to Springfield - 265 miles Jayne and I had waited a long time for the road trip of a life time: riding a Harley Davidson across America on Route 66. We had already spent some time in the centre of Chicago, but today we would be heading south west from the centre of town. We had taken a taxi ride out to the suburb of Glenview to collect he …

Historical Traveler Reviews Holiday Inn Chicago - Mart Plaza
We stayed at Mart Plaza the weekend of the 10th to the see the Bulls and 76ers for my sons 10th B-day. We had a great river view! The one thing I did not care for was the walk to the room, you have to enter through the main lobby of Marts Plaza, take an elevator to the lobby of the Holiday Inn and then another elevator to your room. We did eat breakfast in the hotel one morning and it was pretty good, service wasn't that great, but kids eat free. Our form of transportation for the weekend was taxi-all I can say is HOLD ON !! State Street was great. They had some type of German outdoor festivale going on, Marshall Fields animated windows were awsome, and the horse carriage ride was fun too. Did some shopping on Michigan Ave. Ate at Bubba Gumps at Navy Pier and hung out there for the day. Of course the highlite of our weekend was the Basketball game.
Our family of four has stayed here several times. We have chosen it because the location is great for the grownups--we walk to the opera, and because it has a pool for the kids and coupons for the kids to eat free at the breakfast buffet (if adults pay the regular price). However, the pool has lost its attraction because it is freezing. We asked about it and were told it's because it's unheated--the water just reflects the ambient temperature of the room. The room is on the exterior of the building and has a glass ceiling, and thus it is not particularly warm in winter. Maybe it's fine in the summer time, but don't expect it to be fun for kids in winter. The rooms are clean and generally somewhat nicer than a typical Holiday Inn and a good value for location in other respects.
Excellent! I Highly Recommend!
I was in charge of planning a trip to Chicago for the Travel Club at my University. Only four of us ended up going and I stayed at a friends, but I found a great deal for the other three students! We got an excellent rate of $99 per night which included breakfast for two! The hotel was beautiful! It is an atrium style which I always enjoy. The room was clean, spacious, and had a nice view. Checking in and out could not have been easier and the staff at the hotel was very friendly. I highly recommend this hotel! The location is nice too because it is downtown and within walking distance of most things, but in a quieter area on the river.
We stayed here August 20-22. We arrived early in the morning and they checked us in with no problem and
check out at 3.oo pm was no problem, too.
The staff was very friendly. The room was huge and clean and the view was nice, too.
As transfer from the Airport ORD we choose the train. It took about 45 min. and costed 1,75 $ p.person/way.
First you take the blue line to Clark Station and then change to brown line to Merch.Mart . It is a just 5 min. walk from Merch. Mart Station to the hotel.
It takes about a 15-20 min walk from the hotel to reach the Mag.Mile, but is a very nice walk along the river and we felt very safe even so at the evening.
Great view and wonderul hotel
My husband and I had a wonderful stay at this hotel, our room was great and the view was fabulous. Everyone was so helpful in helping us plan our days and giving advice on where to eat, we were not dissappointed.
The most memorable part of our stay at this hotel was the fantastic view over the Chicago River and the skyline. Spectacular! Request a room with a river view. The location is great if you want to be within walking distance of the Magnificent Mile.
The room was pleasant and clean. The entrance to the hotel was under construction, so getting to the lobby was like going through a maze. It is also a bit of a hike to get from the parking ramp to the hotel. I recommend going elsewhere for breakfast, as it was overpriced.
We found the staff and concierge to be helpful and friendly.
I went there for Memorial weekend and booked at expedia. The price was very low for an Hotel closed to the loop. Arrive in late morning but was able to check in with no problem. Room was very clean . Swimming pool and excercise rooms are great . The view over chicago river and sears towers was fantastic . Expect a lot of kids everywhere.
Better than I expected
I was in town for business and stayed at the hotel for 6 days. I arrived early and was able to check in right away. Along with my keys, I was given a coupon for 1 free in-room movie. I thought that was great. The rooms were very large and the bathrooms were clean. The room looked as if it had recently been renovated. I had an excellent view of the Merchandise Mart and the River. There were many great restaurants and shops within walking distance. I would definitely stay here again.
I stayed here for a week january 13-20th. I arrived early in the morning and they checked me in with no problem. If you don't mind paying extra you can get a corner room which gives a double view of the river off Wacker Dr. Spectacular scene at night.
We are a couple in our late thirties and traveled with our two sons, 6 and 14, over their spring break (April 9-12, 2003). I made my travel arrangements through expedia. I was pleased with my rates...they were the lowest I could find anywhere. Upon arrival, we were greeted by a bell man immediately at our car. He was very friendly and informative. We had a great conversation during the ride to the 15th floor. When we arrived at the check-in desk everything was ready and went smoothly. My reservations made through expedia were complete. They had even placed us in a room facing the city and the river without us even asking! The bell man was very helpful getting our baggage to our room. He showed us where everything was from the ice machine to the remote control. The room was exceptionally clean and well taken care of. The bathroom was also a very nice size...possibly even handicap accessible. The cleaning ladies kept the room very clean and nice smelling upon our arrival back each afternoon. Each evening when we went out to dinner, Stephen, the concierge, was very helpful giving us suggestions for dinner and attractions. He always gave us a map with highlighted directions and tips. He really seemed to enjoy his job! The children loved the swimming pool and swam every night. They were usually the only ones in the pool. A nice work out room was next to the pool with see through glass windows. We really enjoyed our stay at the Holiday Inn Plaza Mart and would highly reccomend it to others. The price was the best we could find in downtown Chicago. The quality was much higher than your average Holiday Inn. The only con my husband and I had was the restaraunt. The prices were, in our opinion, very high. $2.95 for two slices of toast. Give me a break! We naively had the breakfast buffet our last day there and our bill total was $55 (for a Denny's-like buffet). We thought that was a much too high for a family of four for breakfast. I would recommend going over to the mart and getting soseum visit or an omni-max visit for a family of four. However, you live and learn. Overall, we would stay there again in a heart beat and just bring some donuts or go to a coner diner and grab breakfast. I hope this review will help. I know that I heavily rely on reviews to help me make decisions on where to stay when I vacation. Kathy
