A really nice hotel with easy access to the airport, and a convenient shuttle service. Staff allowed us to check in early. Very quiet and clean hotel.

Comfortable, Convenient, But hope Nothing Goes Wrong

    Large comfortable room
Location is convenient for the airport by complimentary shuttle bus
Reachable from the city by metro and a 15 minute walk
Staff friendly at first, but when the door lock jammed denying entry they blamed the guests. But the technician who opened it said it was a battery failure. It meant waiting an hour late at night for the technician to arrive and then a change of room. No apology was offered and no compensation. The hotel was prepaid, but on check out the next morning, there was some additional tax to pay of Euro 5.11. Having the exact coins of Euro 5.10 to offer was not good enough; they insisted on having Euro 5.11, which meant giving notes and getting a lot more coins in change. For all the disruption of the night before they were not prepared to offer even 1 cent in compensation.

... and not overwhelming. Van Gogh's story is well known but I had recently read a Christopher Moore novel, "Sacre Bleu". Although it was not a particularly good novel and a fictionalized account of what could have really been the cause of van Gogh's death, I did gain an appreciation for how much more complicated it was to get paint colors back then. It's obvious once you think about it but it's not like the artists could go to ...

... we headed to bed. Poor Shane struggled a bit through the night as he's such a light sleeper. Saturday We had breakfast at the hostel at 9 and then went to explore the city. Our first stop was the "Amsterdam" letters. We started our 3 hour walking tour at Dam Square. Our tour guide was quite good, energetic and maintained my interest level for the duration. Sights included: red light district, old church, royal palace, WW2 monument, Chinatown, Jewish district, 3 ...

... that my straightener and blow drier do NOT fit in the converter because they have that thing where one plug is larger than the other (know what I mean?). Pain in the ass. Sooo I am going curly hair all week :) (really cuts down getting ready time. As we drove to Amsterdam our tour guide, Matt, had us play a few get to know each other games and then told us all about the things we were seeing and going to see. I now know the history of the tradition of presenting clogs to ...

... trip to the local market for supplies, a nice nap and then a wander. I took the tram into Centraal and walked around ogling the sights, just like all of the other tourists. Unlike many of them, I was sober (no, really!). I eventually had dinner in Den Waag, a former gatehouse and weighing station built in 1482, also popular for executions… now it is a restaurant in the middle of a square called Nieumarkt, which is always hopping; overpriced and so-so food, nice ...

... or something'. Nadiah reluctantly gave him a couple of euro's and we were both quite grateful that that was all he did. Next time we won't be caught off guard! We then had ages to wait for the train so we sat down in a corner near the platforms. When our train finally came up on the board we had 5 mins to find platform 3 and this station was huge! We found 4-20 but couldn't find 1-3!! So I spotted a lady stood by the escalator. She looked approachable so ...
