Muscat, Oman paulatluxury... the border between Oman and UAE does not any barbed wire or walls - since there is nothing but miles and miles of hot and rocky desert on each side. Re-entry into Dubai was a bit of a stunner - considering one moment you are watching sand dunes and the next you pass skyscrapers and buildings. Our next destination is Jordan which we leave on Monday for. First stopping in Amman where we will make our way to Petra, the Dead Sea, and many many more sites.
Muscat, Oman willa_andrewToday, Friday is Oman's Sunday. Almost all museums are closed and most shops close by about noon. We headed out early to the port town of Muttrah, a suburb of Muscat. It has a bowl shaped harbor and seafront of merchant houses and hotels. We walked through the Muttrah souk (market), which is comprised of narrow streets and winding alleys (much of it covered) and is packed with stalls, curio shops, and misc ...
Muscat, Oman jfontanieuWell today was what I would call the drive bys! Mubina had told us that we needed to go to Ruwi to the souks there. Anita and I got off, found our way to this place and looked for the souk. Well, this wasn't a souk like we were thinking. This was an area of Indian shops that weren't in a covered area but streets of shops. We looked around a little bit and then decided that this was not a shopping area for us! I was worn out from ...
Muscat, Oman kcroone... Hundreds of dolphins were swimming around the ocean, feeding and playing. It was an extraordinary sight and one that will stay with me for a very long time. Nature in its true form. On the way back in to shore we went along the coast and took in Al Mirani Fort and Al Jalali Fort, both guarding the harbour. Al Mirani Fort has a story about it, which I read in the Lonely Planet. It goes along the lines of a Portuguese ...
Muscat, Oman raniroo... When Sultan Qaboos came to power (bloodless coup, overthrew his father in 1970) there were only 10kms of sealed roads, no schools, no hospitals. Apparently the Sultan goes camping through the country every year (I expect in a little more style than our version) so his subjects can ride their camels into the camp to have a bit of a chat about what they might need - electricity for the village, etc. A man of the people who is trying to juggle progress with ...
Muscat, Oman suesy6652... safely on the Emirates' west coast...but STILL. Whoever heard of a cyclone in Arabia? Now before I go off for maybe the third time about global warming, I'm going to stop and instead mention that there is a human face to this. If you're in the States, probably the only human face you see right now is that of Paris Hilton, the miserable little wretch, if you can call that face "human". But it's ...
Muscat, Oman holyrockthrower... and did not leave the airport. However, I can report that it seems unsurprisingly flat, hot and dusty. Plus there was lots of expat Brits flying home for Christmas, presumably with their suitcases stuffed with cash. Also I did get to see some people from a religion I did not recognise. They were dressed in what looked white togas and the women had full facial masks with half a dozen or so vertical strips cut into it. Maybe it´s a certain Islamic sect ...
Muscat, Oman alanhalsall... Actually they make 3 ft large hole with there front paws n make 2 ft narrow hole with there hind paws n then lay there eggs. It's the most vulnerable moment as foxes sometimes take advantage and eat away the eggs. A large turtle lays up to 150 eggs in one sit of 15 mins. Then they cover the holes n they make a similar hole near by to dupe the predators, they actually fool the predators lot of times as they end up searching wrong place for eggs. You know the sad part is out of ...
