... life and heritage on the river banks. The tar extraction pits were most fascinating. They get the tar (i.e. resin) from the tree trunks, buried in large pits with a fire above. After this, we wandered around some of the town, had dinner at one of the stalls in the market square ( I had salmon, Ron had reindeer sausage and elk meatballs!) and then back to the hotel. I'm getting used to saunas at the end of the day. Very ...

We drove from Vaasa to Oulu yesterday. Oulu is the largest northern town in Finland. Our hotel was close to the water which was nice. Today, we set off to walk along the riverside park. We followed the Lonely Planet recommendation and explored the Taidemuseo modern art gallery, which turned out to be very good. ... again in 5 weeks. Then we explored the covered markets - what a deli! Bought "smoked" salmon, reindeer, cheese and black bread. Then had a wonderful lunch of mixed cooked meats, cooked small whole fish (?sardines), fried potatoes and vegetables, at the outdoor market. Drove on to Kajaani, an important centre for tar transportation (in the 19th century, this region produced more tar than anywhere in the world.) Climbed around the old castle ...

Domna's house - lunch at Vartilus border crossing - Korkana Husky Farm 41km

The Husky Farm is a nice sauna spot for farewell. Huskys are calmer than expected. In particuliar the last day showed me I couldn't navigate such sik tour on my own. In part we crossed forest without a trail. It became cold that day and the old snow went ruthlessly sharp. I collected quite some blue marks that day.
