The Northeast of Brazil is where I will spend the last weeks of my journey through South America - enjoying its beaches, colonial history and lively African culture. My trip along Brazil's Northeastern shore will start at São Luis - an old slaving port with a relaxed atmosphere (but lively weekends), a centre where most of the old houses are covered in colonial tiles and where reggae is the music of choice - and end at Salvador de Bahia with a flight back home on 20th April.

... food, lots of people and a huge amount of fancy dress. Every day and night there was blocos, practice parades and then the night of the 12th saw the official opening of Carnaval and me in bed feeling like ****. Lucy said it was amazing, everyone was in the streets, drinking and lunging for a kiss. I was sad I missed it, but figured being well for the first day of carnaval was more important.
