    ... launched on April 23. Much the Jens' chagrin we travelled interstate all day Wednesday and arrived at Paducah, Kentucky, that evening, where we set up our tent.     ... the herbs off the flying bridge to keep them from freezing. We don't mind because it makes the enclosed bridge smell heavenly. We are kicking back right now with the wind howling, the boat rocking and the water slapping. It feels nice and cozy. While it was too windy to travel today we are determined to leave tomorrow and find warmer climates. Our goal is to lock down both Wheeler Dam and then Wilson Dam and spend the night on Pickwick Lake. Hopefully it will be smooth cruising.

    ... The first few miles of Wheeler Lake were breath taking, with high bluffs and good color on the fall foliage. Early on, we passed this particularly stunning wall called Painted Bluff due to its brown and yellow rock. It was about 350 feet high and one of the highest bluffs on the entire river system. I also saw the first bald eagles of the trip as a pair landed in a tree on the bluff. There were water fowl galore all down the river and especially in the ...
