TravelPod's Snapshot

The Holiday Inn Express, formerly known as the Cass Hotel, is conveniently located on North Wabash Avenue, part of the bustling Magnificent Mile district. Its position in the heart of Chicago puts travelers next to the thriving downtown area and one block east from Rush Street's nightlife. Shopaholics will find Michigan Avenue, the home of Water Tower Place and the Nordstrom Mall, just two blocks away.

Satisfied visitors have praised the Inn's affordable tariffs, which are lower than most nearby establishments, like the Four Points by Sheraton or The James. Despite renovations in February 2013, the guest rooms retain a retro charm. What the hotel lacks in modern polish, it makes up for with old-fashioned hospitality. Guests report that the employees they met during their stay were friendly, courteous, and always willing to go the extra mile.

The hotel's on-site restaurant only serves breakfast, which is included in the room rate. Several Italian eateries and steakhouses are located within walking distance, to make sure hotel guests will never go hungry in the evenings. Additional perks like free high-speed Internet access, free local calls, satellite/cable television in all rooms, and an on-site fitness center help add value to this Holiday Inn.

Old Hotel and Service to Match!

This is the old Cass Hotel--opened many years ago when the room prices were $2! The rooms have been upgraded, but they are very small, typical of older properties.

The biggest problem was the door frame. The door was wedged tightly upon opening and closing. It had to be pushed and pulled on opening and closing.

There was no quick fix for this; but after getting to the right person, there was an adjustment made on the bill. The location is convenient--2 blocks from Michigan Avenue and lots of restaurants in the area.

      Bare, but sufficient

      from

the cass hotel was just what i expected for the price. it was a mere $64/night during late june. it's basically just a place to sleep, there's no pampering or perks. the only anemity it does have is cable television. the room and bathroom are small, but decently clean. tiny soap bars are provided. the best thing about this hotel would have to be it's central downtown location.

      Good Hotel and Great value

      from

We stayed two nights while sightseeing and attending two baseball games. All public transportation within 3-4 blocks, good restuarants close by, and good shopping in area. Hotel is older but very ciean and staff is very polite and hepfull. Parking garage is next door.

      Outstanding Value

      from

We have stayed at the Cass Hotel seven times over past six years. It is very clean and staff is friendly and responsive. Location in North Bridge area off Magnificent Mile, great restaurants, "L" stations and can't be beat for the price. Highly recommended.

      Had a great month

      from

exellent room rates; During my stay in dic. 2002 for the German Christkindlmarket I always were attended professional and friendly, housekeeping and mantainance are welltrained and help in any situation quickly. the only negativ point are the high telefoncosts even for internetconnection they are charging high prices. Nervertheless a very nice place to stay, I will be back this year for another month!

      Good Deal, Good Location

      from

I have stayed in this hotel twice, I was sorry to hear this hotel has no availability on my upcoming trip to Chircago. This is a plain simple hotel, but is close to alot of great attractions, restaurants and shopping. Beware, there were no washcloths at either of my visit, so if you need one to bathe, you might want to bring your own

      Clean, Cheap, Great Location

      from

This hotel is great - cheap (we found an amazing deal on their website during a very busy weekend) and were even upgraded to a king size bed which I had requested at no charge. On the small side, but the room was clean and adequate for our needs. Also the location is amazing - near everything and there is an El stop only a few blocks away.

      Affordable, good location!

      from

Rooms were very clean. Good atmosphere. Within walking distance of lots of attractions, restaurants, Navy Pier. Better than I expected!

      Clean place

      from

this is my second time stayin there and i love is and will be back soon. if your lookin for reasonable room rate well the cass hotel is the place.

      Cheap, plain, good

      from

Me, my Wife and 2 Children (ages 6 and 10) stayed here.

Very simple room, but fine for us. The room had 2 double

beds and wasn't big but was big enough considering we weren't doing anything but sleeping there. The location,

write in the middle of the madly developing "Miracle Mile"

district in Chicago, was great. Easy access to the El. Other guests seemed to be international youth backpakers,

international low budget businesspeople, and bargain hunter

      couples.

      The best places

      from

I went to the cass hotel and,I like what i saw clean room good house keeping friendly people and the sea of happiness lounge is wonderful. I enjoin myself and i goin back soon.

I gave her the spare set of keys I’d been using for the week and said she could go back to the flat, no need to sit in Starbucks. But Annalissa managed to persuade her to 'shake it off’ and continue with us. She did perk up a bit, so drinks/crème brûlée in the Signature Bar on the 95th floor of the John Hancock Centre was not too painful, and the views were amazing!

Chef Graham Elliott could possibly be described to Melburnians as Chicago's George Colombaris: a Masterchef judge with fingers in all sorts of culinary pies. His sandwich bar (Grahamwich), just around the corner from where Max and Sarah live, was a great standby on our last visit, and we also had a wonderful meal at his eponymous 2-star Michelin restaurant on New Year's Eve 2011. It appears that Graham needs to vet ...

Once again I made my way back to the cashiers and, of course, it had to be the same girl who I'd said I had no room for more trainers so she had a laugh to herself when I asked for a pair of the Jordan Retro IVs.

After my trip to Niketown I decided to grab a drink and then head back to the motel so I stopped off at TGIs and just had a Coke. I don't know what had happened because ...

... slab of these ribs combined with fries, slaw, BBQ beans and peach cobbler left me feeling very food drunk at the end.

At this point, I have seen so much of what Chicago has to offer. But tomorrow's bound to put the icing on the cake, for I will be taking in the Cubs game against the Astros that afternoon. Cannot wait to see them play and visit a ballpark that is so full of history and tradition. To be continued....

... We arrived at 9.30pm and it was reasonably quiet but it filled up within the hour. The venue was split into two. Each area had its own seating and stage and throughout the night we moved from one room to the other to see different bands. Drinks were cheap and the bar staff were relentless with the free pour. We had an absolute ball and spent the night tearing up the dance floor (yes, Gav too)!
