Almost Home
We got up this morning and left for Geneva. It was only a fifty mile drive, but we took the road that follows the lake and it took about 1 1/2 hours. It was a cloudy day, but warm. We arrived in Geneva and went to our hotel and checked in. We unloaded everything from the car and then went to lunch.
At about 2:30PM we drove to Prevessin- Moens …
Lovely Layover
The least expensive ticket we could book from Amsterdam to Paris happened to have a 10 hour layover in Geneva, Switzerland. Lucky for us this gave us a chance to bop around this BEAUTIFUL city.
We got off the plane and found that the train was free to get from the airport into central Geneva (score!). We wandered directly down from the train station to Lake Geneva where we saw a bridge covered with Swiss flags and Geneva's flags, docks ...
Geneva Switzerland
... made of Gruyère cheese and bread. It was good and gen loved it but if I am going to be honest, I don't need to eat it again...perhaps I'd dip my raw vegetables in the cheese but when in Switzerland do what the Swiss do. I made a nice large salad and washed down the cheese with salad and hot tea. Gen is feeling better and is tolerating food again which is nice and just in time for Germany where she swears we will find the best food... W'll have to see about that ...
Travel day...
... have free wifi but it didn't work so I left gen to read her Kobo and walked around to find free wifi next to impossible but I managed 30mins if I didn't move just enough time to contact our next host Ioan. He is travelling back to Geneva today as well and will meet us downstairs shortly. I will write later... Tomorrow I have my walking map ready and we have many a sight to see : ...

Historical Traveler Reviews Holiday Inn Express Geneva Airport
Shoddy Airconditioning
The Express by Holiday Inn Geneva Airport was a typical Holiday Inn hotel. Clean, affordable, free continental breakfast but the only problem was with the airconditioning, which was not cold enough. Other than that, it was good value for the money.
Good for Quick Business or Overnight Before Flight
Stayed at the HI Express Geneva Airport the night before an early flight to Paris, so I was merely looking for a nice bed near the airport.
For the price, the hotel is a good value as the room was very clean, somewhat large (based on Euro standard) and had nice information features, such as a TV with many channels and text-access and what I thought was the best feature -- free wireless internet in the lobby. This was the first night I had free internet in my 10-night stay in Italy and Switzerland. I think this is a very nice thing for business travelers - and it is inexpensive for the hotel. Service at the very small lobby bar was good and fast.
There is no food in the hotel, but it is very easy to go to the airport via the hotel shuttle, or, I would recommend quick walk over to the Movenpick Hotel where they have many restaurants. I ate at the Japanese Restaurant and had some VERY good sushi -- I learned later that the restaurant was the best in the city for sushi.
Good Value in this super expensive country
Who would have thought that you could pay 20 dollar for a regular McDonald's meal, or 30 bucks for a pound of ham at Carre Four (Europe's Wal-Mart).
This is the reason why this hotel is so good. You get the value of a Holiday In an with a 30-40 minute ride to downtown Geneva. Transportation was very easy waling 500 meters to the bus stop and taking number 9. You could easily acces the red cross or UN by taking a bus in from of the hotel.
The staff was amazingly multilingual and polite. The rooms well appointed with enough room for four people. We had two for 7 people and did not feel crowded...well I share with three women, so the shower was tough, but that was not the hotels fault.
The have a free shuttle to the airport which makes it very convenient to make it you base and no worry about any luggage hauling. The price was decent and there is a Carre Four about 500 meter away, which means you can buy stuff for dinner, because believe me this is an expensive city.
I would definitely recommend this hotel to all who are willing to sacrifice a 30 minute rid to downtown for a good clean quality hotel with free (limited) buffet breakfast.
Perfect for the last night......
Stayed here on last night of a three-week European trip, October 2004. An ideal conclusion...especially after some very smoky, old worn hotels. Only five-minutes from airport and airport train station, convenient shuttle, spotlessly clean, well-designed, perky overnight rooms, reasonably priced, good soound-proofing, generous buffet breakfast, everything at peak efficiency....and the entire seventh floor is non-smoking. What a concept!
Just perfect for a final night of checking reservations, re-packing, and getting a good night's sleep before the long flight home.
Modern and comfortable
Did the job, Convenient for both the airport, which has a shuttle bus, and the town. The bus to town goes from the overhead motorway by the Carrefour shopping centre. This shopping centre also has a brilliant self service restaurant (Mandora) which is very cheap by Swiss standards and plenty of choice
Could do better...
This hotel is OK for a quick overnight before a flight, but you could probably do better. The architecture is uninspiring - it stands like a big stainless-steel brick in the center of a wide expanse of asphalt - and the decor is Euro-Jetson's modern. When I checked in around 5 PM the hotel seemed pretty empty. Nevertheless I was given a room in which there was no pillow on the bed and the toilet didn't flush (no water). You'd think they'd keep track of such things. To their credit, the staff was very courteous and they gave me another room immediately. Problem was, it was on the noisy side of the hotel, facing the main drag that goes by the airport. The soundproofing was so bad, I kept looking to see if my window was open a crack. And I was on the 5th floor, too. Bottom line: try the other Geneva airport hotels before you go for this one, unless the price is especially low, or the others are full.
Excellent Value
I stayed here at the end of March 2004 and enjoyed my one night stay. A very good location just a short distance (by shuttle) from the terminal at Geneva Airport. The room was clean, modern, comfortable and good value. I stayed in a room with a Queen size bed which also has a small desk and sofa. Check in/out was quick and efficient.
Fine
Stayed January 04. The hotel is modern and clean. Selection is great for continental breakfast. Take care if your flight arrives late, as the shuttle bus to the hotel stops at 11.30. As the hotel is only a 20 minute walk, taxis often refuse to take you there. This is a problem if like me, you don't know the way and it is snowing heavily! On a very convenient regular bus route that will take you easily to the airport/ palexpro/ nations. Change at nations to go to the city centre (overall about 30 minutes).
Acceptable for a short stay
The HI Express at the Geneva Airport is rather new, very clean, but appears rather utilitarian. Rooms are small by North American standards but typical for Europe. Hotel has free breakfast with some hot items; free airport shuttle van service. Parking is like everywhere else in Geneva...pay per hour. For being close to the airport, the hotel is quiet though.
