Albuquerque to Holbrook Due to the rain (mentioned previously), we decided to play it safe and stick to the interstate from ABQ to Holbrook shortening our driving time considerably as we would be avoiding the long and winding roads of route 66. The admission fee also allowed us to go into the Painted Desert. The colours of the mountains were so vast and extensive. The range of colours was magical and was so interesting to see. We continued to drive around to different viewing points but we were out of water and soon began to feel the heat.

The best view of it is from the top and we had a few goes at trying to find the course of the original Route 66 from the western edge of Santa Fe. Our map said there were power lines along the route (an easy line to follow if you are twisting left and right off the route trying to find your way), but we couldn't see them.
