Now branded the Mercure Hoi An Royal - very central with easy access to the markets. Has a lovely pool for relaxing. Bit dated - but clean and staff very friendly. Breakfast selection excellent - and some tables set overlooking the pool which is great. Decent size bed.

Checked in to the hotel and given Room 111 which is a lucky number apparently. Certainly lucky for us as we were upgraded to a poolside villa! Lovely room looking over the pool - fabulous. Only weird thing is that the shower is in the same cubicle as the toilet - I guess if you're short of time in the morning you can shower and go to the loo at the same time!

I had time before we left HCM City to take a walk down to some markets close by. Do love these markets - though the same gear is in everyone.
We set off to the airport at 10 - to catch a flight leaving at 12 for Danang. 1/2 hour delay so didn't arrive until 1.30. On to a bus to be driven to gorgeous restaurant right on the beach. The sea …

Flew from Hanoi to Danang, just over 1 hour and were picked up at the airport and driven to Hoi An approx 50 minute drive. Very different from Hanoi, much quieter and less traffic. Checked into the hotel, unpacked and went for a swim. So refreshing. Dinner in Orchid Garden really nice. Little supermarket next door - bought gin, vodka, coke & …

... off we went again. This time I was talking with Tram and Jenny, because only the three of us had to park the motorcycles outside the Old City, which is a walking and cycling zone. Jenny still seemed a little closed, so I tried again to have a conversation with her. She then, in a typical Vietnamese manner, asked me if I was married. I told them, and she said she was sorry. I told her that there was nothing to be sorry about. People grow apart all the ...

... sea. I was a bit concerned before as they said it would be a fair amount of seafood but we had a great mix. As well as pork and chicken we had clams, mussels and squid rings. The breaded squid rings were really great, clams weren't bad but I wasn't too keen on the mussels. I'm glad I gave them all a go. We also had plenty of rice and veg, it was quite a banquet. Dinner was accompanied by Uy's favourite artist, Sam Smith. His concern about Sam Smith's ...

... quiet village with the main attraction being the river and the boats you can go on to see the rice fields growing on the water, and the rock formations. People refer to it as the land version of Ha Long Bay. Emma and I had a walk along the river and a lady in her house asked if we wanted a boat ride. She was holding her child and had others running around her legs, playing with goats. We said ok as it was cheaper than what you pay at the ticket office (the boat rowers only ...
