      Liking the Upgrade

Checked in to the hotel and given Room 111 which is a lucky number apparently. Certainly lucky for us as we were upgraded to a poolside villa! Lovely room looking over the pool - fabulous. Only weird thing is that the shower is in the same cubicle as the toilet - I guess if you're short of time in the morning you can shower and go to the loo at the same time!

Flew from Hanoi to Danang, just over 1 hour and were picked up at the airport and driven to Hoi An approx 50 minute drive. Very different from Hanoi, much quieter and less traffic. Checked into the hotel, unpacked and went for a swim. So refreshing. Dinner in Orchid Garden really nice. Little supermarket next door - bought gin, vodka, coke & …

First she went round the group learning our names (or re naming us in the case of 'pinky Liz' - not me for once - and 'normal Liz' yes that was me and 'blue Nicola' and 'black nicola' based on tshirt colour only!!). Then it was off to the market! Han showed us how to pick the best pineapples and mangos and we tried small Vietnamese strawberries, kinda like blackberries, that ...

... also moored along side or midstream. From the renowned and well lit Red River Bridge people were lowering candles in paper cups into the water. We found a delightful place to dine, sitting on a very narrow balcony next to an embarrassing Kiwi lady; she was asking the waiter "Did you learn Communism at school?" Earlier Bruce discovered an ice cream parlour so off we went - it's a serve yourself arrangement so he was very ...

... for activities it is a good opportunity to reflect on our first few days "on the road". We have settled into a nice relaxed traveller mode, by taking each moment as it comes and interacting with the local people along the way Nothing identifies Vietnam more than a "cone headed hat" woman balancing a stick on her shoulder attached to two baskets. In fact the women seem to do most of the work while the men sit around on small ...

... nicely with colourful lanterns at night by the river, which makes it all very attractive.

Unfortunately, over 600 tailoring businesses in one tiny town, on top of all the other businesses, makes for a pretty cut throat environment - and boy could you feel it. 99.9% of the time we were approached (which is once every 10 seconds or so), we were greeted by ladies saying 'Buy something'. Not a hello, not a smile, not even eye contact, just 'buy something'. ...
