... But it's gradually become more natural to speak English again. As for getting up to speed with new words and phrases, I think the only one I'll take with me is "pop-up shop" (in my day, we just called it a market and weren't too fussy about whether it was temporary or permanent). Day 9
... centre has been gentrified beyond repair, Hillsborough is more like the Sheffield I remember from the early to mid 90s.
I make my way to the indoor shopping centre for lunch, where I find a fantastic, old-fashioned greasy spoon caff called Shoppers Rest, which probably hasn't updated its menu since the 1970s. My southern/Swenglish accent makes me stick out like a sore thumb here but the staff are friendly ...
Days 7 and 8
... We try to get in to have a look at the paternoster lift but the building is closed for the weekend. Instead, we crash the Student Union, which is considerably tarted up, especially the union bar, still known as Bar One. I'm glad that they're putting money into the old place but does it have to be so yuppified? I suppose this is all part of the transformation of Sheffield from steel city to knowledge city that's been going on ...
Day 6
... was spent late-night shopping at Meadowhall - well, mostly in Primark if I'm honest. The place was packed, presumably because it's the run-up to Christmas and everything is open until 10 pm. Managed to find an Only Fools and Horses T-shirt in the men's department, which is a welcome addition to my wardrobe and almost guaranteed to be unique in Sweden.
