We didn't get a great night's sleep the night of the 29th and had an early start the next morning. Our bus left Hue at 8am bound for Hoi An. I slept a little on the bus and we finally arrived at about midday. We had been recommended a place to stay here by the hotel owner in the last place so we decided we'd give it a go. As usual all of us backpackers headed in the same direction together, when we got off the bus, using each others knowledge to find our way. Myself and Alan left the others a...
Hoi An, Vietnam alandrach DAY TEN
We had a 4 hour bus ride from Hue to Hoi An - but stopped half way at the top of a mountain range.
There was lovely beach and ocean on both sides, and it was the scene from the Top Gear episode where they are riding their motorbikes through winding hilly roads with awesome scenery (appologies if this episode hasn't aired in NZ yet!)
First stop in Hoi An was to get some lunch... we went to a restaurant where each table was run by a different person. We ate at Mr Lingh's ta...
Hoi An- a beautiful small town spared by the war where peace reigns after 3 weeks of noise. The President of Singapore was visiting so all traffic was banned from this small town set by the river. It was an oasis of peace and quiet as my thoughts dreamily flowed as I listened to nothing but cycles going by. Ive met up again with Lawrence whom I met in Saigon. Its amazing how many faces you see again on your travels.Ive spent a couple of days looking around this small town and leave tomorrow for ...
Hoi An, Vietnam lordosWe had an early morning flight from Nha Trang to Danang this morning and this is where our brush with stardom began. Our guide introduced himself as Spider - "you know, like Spiderman, yeah, Spider". What? Spiderman in the flesh! Awesome. He had a driver standing by to take us to My Son Holy Land just outside Hoi An. The Cham temples are quite beautiful (those that weren't bombed by the US during the war) and Spider had a lot of knowledge about the history. We also saw one of the remaining Ch...
Hoi An, Vietnam lukeandjenWe caught a 3.5 hour minivan ride from Hue to Hoi An - after breaking down on route, we continued through some stunning country side.. mountains on one side (lush and green), the sea on the other, rice paddies with women working them using water buffalo.. absolutely amazing!! We arrived, checked in then went for lunch and to look at the various tailors! I ended up on a major shopping spree which Im posting tonight (today is the 11th, but we've been here since yesterday).. After shopping and w...
... as good as it would have been the day before.. oh well at least we weren't driving through a typhoon!
At the top we stopped for photos, a look at a US army base up there, drank tea and got ripped off by some desperate Vietnamese women who guilt tripped us into buying a load of tacky bracelets we didn't want so their kids could go to school.
We went back down the pass and stopped off at China beach in Danang before we arrived at our hotel in Hoi An at around 3pm.

... Reunification Express all those years ago. Mark introduced Paul to his barber, who managed to make him look like a US Marine and give him a shave, all for 30,000 dong (about $A2).
Mark had a meeting with a bright young fellow, Binh, who works for Robyn at CHIA. He wants to study in Australia, so Mark is going to find out information on courses and scholarships for him. He already has a degree in environmental science and now he wants to study international/community ...
... much of the larger vietnamese towns. the central area of the town is also pedestrianised which is great as you can easily get away from the noise and annoyances of the surrounding heavy traffic!
we arrived in hoi an off an overnight bus and again chose to take a look at the first hotel we saw, the room we were taken to was, as we have found most places in vietnam, very clean and tidy and exactly what we were looking for. with a pool, free wi-fi and cable tv, 4USD each a night ...
... Vietnamese cooking class and learned how to prepare a 5 course meal! I have the recipes, so maybe I'll host a dinner when I get home. We learned to make: Sweet and Sour Chicken Soup, Pork Spring Rolls, Green Papaya Salad, Fish Wrapped in Banana Leaf (sound familiar, all you Doc Ford's people?!), and Eggplant in Claypot --->YUMMY!! Everything was so tasty, I love Vietnamese food :)
I hope everyone is happy and healthy! More to come...
