From the Hostel to the Hilton
Apparently I am older than I had previously thought. And I know that "you're only as old as you
feel," but after three nights sleeping on a thin mat on the floor of a hostel
in Asakusa it’s definitely time for something a little more soft. But more on that later….
Sorry it’s been a while since we’ve written. We’ve been going fairly non-stop for the past
four days or so. After we return...
It's a small world after all
Not to make anybody jealous (ok, maybe just a little bit), but I write to you today from the porch of our bungalow in Haad Salad Beach on Koh Phangan island in the bay of Thailand. I am about 20 steps from the sandy beach, about 3 steps from the hammock, and about 6 inches from a frosty beverage. This is about as far away from the non-stop action of Tokyo as you can get. Maybe when I get caught up to Thailand I’ll call this entry "Asia, a land of con...

... during our work week)

So on my day off I thought it would be fun to make Boeuf Bourguignon and Poudin Alsacien for dinner. I shopped and found the ingredients and made a delicious Julia Child's meal for the guys, complete with garlic mashed potatoes. I think it turned out quite well – check out the pictures and let me know what you think!

More later . . .
Urayasu, Kanto, Japan mark820... 8230;. Two of the girls had a harrowing afternoon going to Costco – it took them several hours and we wondered where they might be…. They had just been shopping and exploring and having a good time. All of us here at the apartment, eating and drinking and laughing. It was fun until the wee hours! We all got along very well and I think it’s going to be a fun two months.

More later . . .
Urayasu, chiba-ken, Kanto, Japan mark820... another self-serve affair and had an interesting selection of items, including the now infamous "Meat Patty Danish". Dinner was from Pan-Galactic Pizza in Tomorrowland, which had a pretty crazy restaurant interior... but we had to eat outside because that's where the only free seats were.

As far as shows were concerned most of the stage shows were outdoors so we avoided them because of the cold, we saw the parade while we were in the 75 minute queue for the Haunted Mansion ...
Urayasu, Tōkyō, Japan v1213... minutes, I arrived safely, and I can safely say, I've never been happier. When I'm sat down with my wife and children in 20 years time and the question arises of what my happiest memory is, I'll quickly flick through my wedding, and the birth of my first-born, and arrive conclusively at the time when I limped into the Tokyo International Youth Hostel at 2am after the most difficult journey of my life. Forget Valentine's Day. I was just glad to be home.
Tokyo, Japan conore... only afford the all-you-can-eat brekkie buffet that day) I was in no mood to keep repeating,' Where is your hostel? I'm at the train station,' to my hostel landlord who'd previously managed to speak English fine but who had now forgotten it somehow. My gallent hero had come to my rescue and after listening to the other end, nodded as the money ran out. 'He says you've got a reservantion,' Takanora said. 'I know that!' I waved my arms around in ...
Tokyo, Japan emmaireland... at about six foot three and two hundred pounds wasn't having as an enjoyable trip. All in all the flight was painless. Surprise! I reach Japan, clear customs and collect my baggage easy enough. Even know the little Japanese lady that found my skateboard bag thought it was a little heavy. Now!The plan is to hop a 1 hour train to into Tokyo, navigate the bus and train depot and catch an overnight bus to the city of Hiroshima.Easy ...
Tokyo, Japan olea... to the city's most infamous shrine. Yasukuni-jinja has been all over the news in recent years. This is the place that Koizumi always visits around New Year's, severely ******* off Korea and China. When it comes down to it, the notion of the sacred site is not a bad one. It was originally established to commemorate Japan's war dead, a kind of thing that most countries develop in some form or other. The problem is that years later in 1978, 14 Class A war ...
