... I write this we have just returned from a $28 lunch in the dining car and are gliding through the backstreets of Portland, Oregon.

Looks like this venture is getting off to a great start.

It has been a long and tiring trip to Sa Diego, but I still feel that for all it's bad publicity, Amtrak is a great way to travel. An interesting juxtaposition though, we arrived in LAX ...

... heading to the pool. The entry was through a dimly lit opening into a romantically lit spa area. We soaked for a wonderful hour under the stars.

Friday, February 20. Located about a half a mile from Interstate 10 and within earshot, the truckers cruising down the freeway at all hours made for an early morning wake up at 7 AM. Just outside our campsite is a row of clustered bamboo trees that are home to many types of birds. Last night about ...

It was pretty busy, with some of the Mexicans around there setting up a BBQ, and many others taking advantage of ...

... half out right at the front of the enclosure. The polar bears really were beautiful, and the zoo staff said they were hopeful that one of the bears was pregnant which is of course great on a world scale for the population of polar bears. Isaac's favourite animal was the gorilla's who we got to witness the shift change in. Prior to the change, the morning gorillas were becoming rather disengaged, sitting rather thoughtfully without much movement. Once the gates ...

... bar and sat and drank Newcastle Brown Ale of all things before getting a taxi back to the ship. The next day, me, Eli and Cy got the ferry from Coronado to the USS Midway. We had a good tour of the ship but some parts were closed because there was an event on. We went for a walk to the Gas Lamp district where most of the bars and restaurants are. We went back to the Tilted Kilt for tea. The food wasn't that great. I had some garlic clams to start followed by a burger. We then went back ...
