It's been a great two days - very long, but wonderful. We spent an entire day out on Marine One - a huge floating pontoon out at the Great Barrier Reef that we reached by an express jet catamaran. Lots of snorkeling and lounging on the sun deck (mostly in the shade of course) and a little lunch along the way. The weather was perfect - sunny, …
We left Horn Island yesterday after a six month stint in the Torres Strait. Soooo relaxed now that we don't have to worry about the oncall phone :) Landed in Cairns at drink o clock, dropped the kids at the kennel and went to the nearest bar/cafe for a drink.
We ended up at the Raw Prawn, nice enough food, **** service but it …
There were only two things on our hit list for Cairns: Reef and Rainforest. Our first day out, we got the lay of the land and set up a reef trip for the following day. The day after that, we planned on taking the scenic train out to the rainforest village of Kuranda and then taking the skyline back over the canopy on the way back into town. < …
The weather was really wild today. Sun, rain, clouds, wind, sun, rain, sun, clouds and on and on. We stayed in this morning as I was catching up with the blog and trying to decide what activity would be best based on the weather. Tough decision!!!
We finally ventured out of the hotel and decided to go visit the Aboriginal Cultural Center …
Mom was well rested so she joined me on another exploration of the Cairns area. Today we headed to Kuranda to explore the many cultural shops (tourist traps really) but a "must stop" on the tourist circuit. Not really my scene since it was rally commercialized but I'm sure it fits others' idea of travel. Before entering the township, we went over …
How has this hotel rated in the past?
This was a secret hotel on lastminute.com and we have never stayed here before but it was great and I would be happy to come back. The service was exceptional, very geared towards the Japanese market. The rooms have been refurbished and are lovely, clean and spacious with water views. Secure access to all floors and reasonably priced valet parking.

Historical Traveler Reviews Hilton Cairns
I found the Hilton very over-priced for what it offers. There are other hotels nearby that are much cheaper. The rooms are small, and the bathrooms need renovating. The entrance to your room is outside on a tiled verandah, hence you hear anyone / anything that goes by, as well as doors slamming from the floors near you. Room servicing is inconsistent - not a lot is done on the weekend. The restaurants are reasonably priced and the food is lovely. Breakfast is very good. The tour desk is not always open, but they are helpful. Location is great - central to everything. Lovely pool. The machines and weights in the gym are old.
Stayed at the Hilton Cairns for a couple of nights.
Best thing about this hotel is the location. It is a 2 minute walk from the wharf where all the tours leave and very close to restaurants and bars.
The room smelled a little funky because of humidity bu the hotel provides a vaporiser for aromatherapy. Other than that the rooms are spacious and newly renovated. Try the pool and spa which were empty when we went.
The staff was friendly but what the hotel calls a concierge is really a bell boy and was not able to provide any reliable recommendations for restaurants. The tour desk was also rather inefficient.
Great stay and great service. When I booked this hotel I was a little skeptical as the write up on Hilton was not very impressive. The hotel has a great location, one of maybe 3 hotels of this caliber where the action is. Next door to the Casino, off the boardwalk and very close to where the boats depart to visit the reef. Nice rooms and excellent restaurants. If you are on the executive floor the breakfast and evening reception is first class.
After booking a week at this hotel, I read a less than enthusiastic review of the Hilton on-line. Since my wife had picked the hotel, I did not mention this to her but I was a bit worried. However, I don't know at which Hilton in Cairns (and there is only one) the reviewer stayed but I saw no relationship between the review and the reality.
We had a lovely stay. Room was extremely nice and the hotel's services from laundry to the restaurants were superb. It is ideally located close to the wharf from which the Barrier Reef boats depart.
Actually, we had booked a room in another hotel in Cairns because we got a very good offer overthere. But after one night in the other hotel we felt not good and we wanted to go back to the Hilton where we have stayed a few times before and we felt home immediately ! From the moment we stepped into the lobby it felt good ! Only thing, there were not a lot rooms available anymore. With all that they could do they managed to give us a very nice spa-room ! Recently refurbished, as all the rooms have, very comfortable. The ladies at the Club-lounge were friendly and helpfull and nice to talk to as ever ! As was everybody. Good service from all the staff !
We stayed for a few days in December 2003. It is the best located hotel in Cairns. Large comfortable rooms. The dining room had fabulous views and a good buffet selection for breakfast. Very tropical. Wonderful bed. I would definitely go to this Hilton again. Being there was a very pleasant experience.
I have stayed at Hilton Caiens several times. I enjoyed the hospitality every time. I am going to visit your Hotel this October. See you again. e
I booked a very affordable basic room online. It was non-refundable so I was a little leery. I was pleasantly surprised with a well-kept king-bedded room overlooking the water and the swimming pool (a little gem in itself.) If you have a balcony, keep the door completely shutthe air conditioning is designed not to operate if the door is ajar. The tropical summer climate is very humid. The staff (for the most part) was very friendly and accommodating. Valter from the tour desk was very helpful. The location of the hotel is perfect for those planning to visit the Great Barrier Reef (tour operators are all just steps away from the hotel. Try Ocean Spirit or Passions of Paradise both are great fun and very customer oriented! You are also just steps away from an endless supply of souvenir shops and markets. The concierge made a few good recommendations for restaurants. It is worth the short taxi ride if they make a recommendation outside of the tourist area. I will be back to visit and will stay at the Hilton Cairns.
