Via Sandro Pertini 29 Florence, Tuscany, Italy, 50127, 055-42401
Arriving in Florence at around 4pm, we made straight for our hotel via bus. The worst thing about relying constantly on public transport is that on the first journey to new accommodation you are weighed down by rucksacks and have only a vague idea where you should be going and how you can get there. We managed to locate the right bus, but got off at the wrong stop and ended up wandering the Florentine streets for half an hour or so before we chanced on our hotel. Not ideal in 38-degree heat. ...
Florence, Tuscany, Italy alexanderdruryThe next morning Lyndsey and I held a crisis meeting in the (free) internet room at the Hilton. We were both desperate to escape Florence, but with one more night at our hotel we arrived at the conclusion that going somewhere – anywhere – else on a daytrip was our best option. Pisa seemed the obvious choice, but we weren't sure it would take up a day so we had a look online at various other places on the same train route. We’d heard that Siena was a picturesque town to visit...

Long Coach Journey Again
Well it is official, Ann and I are definitely sick of the coach! The cramped conditions, poor air conditioning and generally long hours on the road have somewhat curbed our enthusiasm for group tours. On the positive side, however, we did enjoy a brief (but hot) visit to Pisa, a very short walking tour of Florence, and a good meal in an old Florentine restaurant. Ann, however, did not enjoy the restaurant meal, fi...

Florentine Walking Tour
After a later rise than normal, we enjoyed breakfast and then were off for our walking tour of Florence. We met our local tour guide Simon at the Galleria dell 'Academia, and we used portable headsets to hear his commentary as we followed him through the city.
In the Galleria, Simon took us through the works of art that include Michelangelo's sculptures. It was interesting to learn how many of the marble sculpt...

... for our walk through the walled village. There is a 14th century fort with make up part of the walls. Today it is used as a prison - your not supposed to take photos of it, but I snapped a couple off before I knew... luckily I was not spotted by the local polizi. The town was cute for sure but I'm not sure it deservered all the accolades given to it by other travellers we had met in Lucca. Having said that we did take more photos than usual.
Volterra, Tuscany, Italy darrenhough74... room in the afternoon and played cards on the terrace and drank the last of our beer. People were gathering under our terrace to take pictures and we had the terrace all to ourselves. This place has been so friendly and wonderful. Coletta and her sister E'letta have been such help. I think I spelled the names wrong and will check when I get home. We went back to the square to have another gigantic slice of ...
Siena, Tuscany, Italy lucy1279... our salami and cheese and looked at the beautiful landscape. We then played cards in the small hallway of our B&B and drank some beer and met Allen and Theresa from California. I was getting ready to beat Mick's ass so we quit playing and talked to them. Anyway, since we spent our Euros with the meat market we had to go to the corner and get 2 slices of pizza for 6.50 euros and that came with a Cola. Each piece was the biggest piece of pizza we ever ...

Siena, Tuscany, Italy lucy1279... we finished it just in time to take in the Florentine Hall of Fame in the square outside the Uffizi. There are sculptures of all the heavy hitters from the Renaissance including Macchiavelli, Dante, Galileo, Donatello, Michelangelo and on, and on. It was like an outdoor walk through an intellectual Cooperstown.

We finished our walk at Ponte Vecchio, a beautiful bridge with its own incredible history (including being the only ...
