1191 Corniche Il Nil Cairo, Egypt, 11221, 2-580-2000
We arrived at Cairo at around 9 PM local time. This time the flight from Dubai was a bumpy one and we had to spend half the time with our seat belts fastened. Specially at the later stage of the flight the plane was bumping so much that at one point I was getting really nervous and started thinking whether I can see Dipto, my Son anymore. By the grace of Allah, we arrived safely at Cairo. The emigration and collection of my baggage went smoothly and I was the first to complete all the formali...
Cairo, Egypt naseem
... sufficient. So life takes on a predictable, if plausible, rhythm, a familiar set of eateries and bakeries that I can depend on. The food is cheap and palatable, if not spectacular, but the sweets are good and the ice cream is to die for (and I don’t usually talk like that). Imagine gelato-quality double-scoop cones… for fifty-five cents US. I’m good.

Considering how many tourists visit the pyramids, it’s surprising the ...
Cairo, Egypt hardiekToday is our second last day and we try to sleep in, but the sunrise call to the mosques wakes us, as does the sound of some of our tour group leaving the hotel's front entry at 5:45 AM.

It feels like the last day on Survivor. Most of the people in our group have departed. There is nothing officially planned and this allows us some time for reflection. We think about the faces we've seen and the places we've been, and it ...
Cairo, Egypt boydandrose... Abu Simbel contains the massive seated carved Pharaohs that look into the sun across the Nile, welcoming the sun god Ra (Hey Ra how are going mate, morning!) I am learning all sorts of Egyptian history and myths. So, one of the myths is that one of the Egyptian gods Osiris marries his sister Isis (apparently the done thing) they then give birth to a beautiful boy who has a Falcon's head, questions surrounding incest do not seem to ...
Giza, Egypt john.boyd.123Alright...this dates back to the first days of my time in Egypt more than a month ago. I had written a lot of this but needed to clean it up and fill in some holes. Sorry it took so long. Another one that nearly catches us up will be up soon. So much to do here!

I got up early Sunday morning for my first day of orientation at the university. In Egypt, a predominately Muslim country where the holy day is Friday, the week starts on ...
Cairo, Egypt richfrohl... for themselves. The Kharfre Pyramid still has a little right at the top. There is also a third one that is under renovation. In the past, one of the Pharaohs ordered it to be destroyed but after 8 months, they had only ruined part of the inside. We walked down by the Sphinx (a statue of a reclining lion with a human head and built in the third millennium BC!!!!) which was just unbelievable. Its not as big as you would think, but still amazing. They estimate that the ...
Cairo, Egypt soro... of the hotel workersgoes through his prayers. Once the Muslim has entered prayer mode, what is happening around them doesn't matter. It seems like a very practical way of praying that allows flexibility in time and place.

That didn't interest me nearly as much though as when Khalid tried to explain the difference between Sunni and Shia. He quizzed us on the difference and I offered the boiler plate explanation of supporters of Ali versus those who ...
Cairo, Egypt jimmyandkristen... and it was straight to the banks to buy our Egypt visas (stickers) wack them in our passport and through immigration. Our transport was there to welcome us to Egypt with a Salaam! We picked up Craig (another of the tour group) on the way to the Hotel, once we checked in and had showers it was straight to bed in our sort of dodgy hotel (it was pretty much standard as we came to realise in the Middle East / Africa, just different standards to Europe). <br ...
Cairo, Egypt dkjohansen... and what to do with it. Maybe ask someone. Learn basic courtesy words and use them until that's what comes out naturally when you run into someone or the cab driver gets hopelessly lost. You can't be a native, but don't let that stop you from faking it with relish.
