Today we "enjoyed" a 7 hour train in Second Class from Prague to Budapest. The train actually went quite quickly becuase we spent a few hours enjoying Hungarian dinner in the dining car. It was a nice way to pass the time. Our hotel is really great. We are staying in the Hilton Budapest West End, and were greeted in the room by a bottle of Hungarian chanpagne, waters, chocolate dipped pineapple, and strawberry dipping sauce. Budapest seems like a cool city. I 'm looking forward to exploring it.

We went to the Mangalica Festival of Budapest on Saturday night. It was full of small vendors, traditional Hungarian food, and live music. Hilton westend disappoints

stayed at the westend from aug 9th thru aug 13th.the day i arrived, the

room they assigned was filthy at best.next morning they transferred me to a different room.service was not very enthusiastic.the main restaurant was pretty nice with good food and pleasant service.check out was a big disappointment.since i am a hilton hhonors member they were supposed to allow for late checkout, but they charged me for late checkout.

incidentally hilton berlin did not charge me for late checkout and they also

upgraded my room.here they did not bother to upgrade.generally they seem very unfriendly and they still have not credited my hilton hhonors points to my account.next time i might go to the other hilton in town.hoping for the best.

but the hotel is centrally located with easy access to downtown.

Most, if not all of the reviews of this hotel, were favourable and in truth I just cannot understand how anyone can find anything to complain about here. We stayed for 3 nights in mid July with friends. The check in satff were helpful and friendly and noted that we had asked fro 2 non smoking rooms. This was a slight problem as the hotel's standard rooms were quite full. Their soluition was to give us a free upgarde on one room to a Junior Suite. Although this was tremendous having seen the standard room I would have been delighted with that. When walking through the hotel every member of staff, without exception, had a ready smile and friendly greeting. Having travelled quite extensively I can tell you that this type of behaviour is far from the norm.They had a great buffet brekafast that set us up for the day and also had an offer of a 2 for the price of 1 dinner and would advise everyone to take up this offer. Without a doubt the next time we visit Budapest it will almost certaiunly be to stay in the Hilton West End. To add to the feeling of great service throughtout our stay, on the day after we returned I received an e mail from the Commercial manager thanking me for completing the questionairre on our experience.

Top class service all round.

Great place to stay in Budapest

My wife and I stayed at the Budapest Hilton West End for a long weekend for the first time. May not be as architecturally inspiring as the Gresham but is an excellent hotel in a good location.

Because of our status we were upgraded to the Executive floor and Barbara the lounge manager was waiting for us as we stepped out of the elevator to greet us. She was very helpful and immediatley booked us in at a local Hungarian restaurant in the Old Town. The lounge is one of the better ones I have come across and there was always a plentiful supply of drinks and food. There is also a nice terrace where you can sit outside and watch the sun set with a glass in your hand.

The rooms are of a good size and well equipped. There's the usual towelling robes and complimentary water and chocolates. The bathroom is large with a separate tub and shower.

Location wise it's very good and the West End Shopping centre is accessable from the hotel lobby.

Don't get a taxi from the hotel and never get in a private taxi - we hailed a taxi who drove us to another taxi and after 5 minutes the meter was showing the equivalent of US$25!

Only gripe was that on checking out the desk staff managed to get our bill wrong and even after sorting it out, we thought, we discovered when we checked the bill later that it was still incorrect.

I recommend the Westend

Stayed 4 nights at the Westend for a conference. My room was excellent - large and with a large bathroom which had a separate bath and shower. There was broadband internet access in the room, which was supposed to incur a charge but actually seems to have been free. (I wasn't asked for any credit card details and no charge appeared on my room). I paid a conference rate of 130 Euros and that included an excellent breakfast. Probably one of the most comfortable hotels I've been to recently.

Location is also good - it's only a few hundred metres from a metro station where there are also lots of bus stops and tram stops.

I'd recommend it.

Wonderful Hotel

Stayed there for 4 nights in March. Excellent location and is in the same complex as the West End Shopping Centre (Mall). Hotel has its own entrance to the Mall and you can get to the Metro (Nugati) through the mall itself - about a 5 min walk. Handy if it is raining outside. The mall has an excellent food court with a wide variety of food stalls. Tram lines 4 & 6 are also a 5 min walk.

Since I was a HHonors member we got upgraded to a suite which was spacious. Al rooms have bathtubs as well as a separate shower cubicle and separate WC's. A well equipped Gym is on the 4th floor as well as the restaurant which serves excellent Buffet breakfast. The usual high standard of Hilton breakfast includes hot American style as well as continental style Cereals/Cheese & Fruits.

The staff were outstanding, very helpful and friendly and made sure our stay was comfortable.

One word of advice - Don't use the hotel taxi's waiting outside the hotel as it is 3 times more expensive than the normal taxis, whom I learnt later had to pay a fee to the hotel.

Overall, compared to its more famous older sister the Hilton Budapest in the castle district which is a lot more expensive, the West End Hilton is good value for money and the central Pest side location is its plus point with it's proximity to restaurants/nightlife and the business district.

I have stayed at the Hilton Westend twice in the last 3 years for conferences. Prices were pretty good. Hotel staff is excellent and very helpful, especially for non European travelers. Ask them for referrals to some great local restaurants. Everything from quiant local flavor to elegant dining. The shopping center is right there and the train station is only a block away. Hotel rooms were large for European standards, but don't forget your converters for your electronic devises. Both times I was there was in August and it rains that time of year so be prepared.

Excellent Hotel

Had a fantastic stay just before Christmas in the Hilton Westend. We got a great deal on lastminute which included a full hot buffet breakfast every morning. The staff couldn't have done more for us and were very helpful giving advice on what to do in the city and where to eat etc.. The room was a good size, not perhaps as luxurious as what I would have expected for a five star hotel but extremely comfortable nevertheless. The location of the hotel couldn't have been better. Get out of the lift on the ground floor, walk through the door on your right and you're in a 400shop shopping centre with some fantastic clothes shops (and a massive food court on the bottom floor). From the bottom of the shopping centre, you can access the metro system which is also very handy. However, if you fancy walking, in c20 minutes, you can reach the Buda side. We preferred the Pest side because it was more modern and lively, but you should have a walk around the castle. Have coffee and cake in Cafe Gerbeaud, an opulent tea room on the square near the river. You will not regret it!

All in all, an excellent stay in the Hilton. One word of advice though, the Hilton Taxis outside the hotel are quite alot more expensive than ordinary taxis which you can pick up on the side of the street!

Hiltons Easy to get confused !

Visitor from Mexico is referring to the wrong hotel:

There are confusingly two hotels under the Hilton Brand in Budapest.

The Hilton Castle Hill is the luxury tourist one in Buda with superb views in a very relaxed area (apart from the hordes of tourists!) and the Hilton West End is the one primarily designed and located for busines people in a busy main road location.(no guest lounges)

The contrast betwen the two Hotels and halves of the City as others have said could not be greater. We preferred the West End Hilton because it is in the Paris like part of the city (wide tree lined Boulevards and hustle and bustle )and it is conveniently located in the best shopping centre in the City.

The Hilton West End is only 4 years old and won best hotel in 2001; no compromise on the room sizes they are generous with bath and separate shower and interenet facility in the hotel which was useful for tracking down our lugagge- thank you KLM; we arrived Saturday night luggage arrived Monday morning and Tuesday evening!

(Suggest you always travel with one days change of clothing and toiletries and essentials in hand luggage-we learnt the hard way!)

The West End Shopping Centre is on a par with Meadow Hall and Trafford Centre in the UK with supermarket , multi screens and excellent food court and an amazing garden at the top of it.

Unlike Castle Hill you can pop down interesting side streets and pop into ordinary pubs and cafes.

By my calculations its is also offers better discounts than Hilton Castle Hill because it presumabaly is less busy at weekends. For our 4 nights stay I was quoted an additional �100 per person for the "proper"one.

So its a very reasonable alternative depending on what you plan to do;like all things in life you pays your money and takes your choice!

Can walk to City Centre and St Stephens Bascilica(which is awe inspiring) along Vaci Street from this location.

We stayed at this hotel because of its great location, just by the Fishermans Bastion. It's close or very accessible to major locations. Rooms were neat and elegant. I highly recommend it.

Superb luxury hotel, but Hilton have better in Budapest.

Budapest is a city of two halves in every respect. From the division between the old Buda and the new Pest sides of the Danube the dichotomy of the city extends outwards. I stayed in the Hilton not long after it, and the West End shopping centre, were opened. They both represent the newer side of the city that is replacing the older and slightly crumbling part of the preious 40 years.

I am not one who appreciates 'character' in a hotel. To me that means that the carpets will have the patina of many feet, and the toilets that of many ... visits. Urgh. So to say that the Hilton is completely characterless is, in this instance, a great compliment. It is a superb hotel in every respect. It is classy, well appointed, meticulously clean, and has a pleasant bar. It is reasonably close to the centre of town, and has its own entrance to the sanitised world of the West End shopping centre.

Reaching the hotel is easy - from the airport a hotel bus will drop you off at the door, and return you when your visit is over. It is not expensive.

BUT

If you can, stay in the Hilton in the Castle District in Buda. It is so much more relaxed there that it will be where I will stay should I return to Budapest.
