It feels good to be back

Oh, October!

... was also amazing. The five towns are connected by wonderful walking paths, and traversing them is the highlight of any Cinque Terre trip. You walk along cliffs falling down into the most turquoise ocean I've ever seen, surrounded by prickly pear, olive groves, and grape vines. At each town we felt obliged to sample their version of pizza, gelato, or cappuccinos. When the sun went down, we crawled onto the big rocks in the harbor to watch the sky ...

Northbound along the Rhine

... guidebook. We passed heaps of tiny little German towns with houses that have black roofs and old crumbling castles up on the hillside. The ride was so nice that we figured we didn't need to take a boat ride as we had already seen it. We got a bit lost again on the way to the hostel (these German towns don't have visible street names!) but found it eventually. We had pasta and sauce with tomoatoes for dinner and I (gasp!) finished my plate before Stephen and ...

Fall Break Begins, and I head to Ireland!

... so I found that fact amazing. I had difficulty as a young, shoe-wearing person. But the views on top were worth the journey, and even more amazing was the trek back down along the ridge of the mountain, sponging along on top of the wonderful peat and dodging errant sheep.
For as beautiful as the country was, the people were even more interesting. There is something very introverted about the Irish. As friendly as those in Westport were, they seemed mostly ...

Koln Cathedral

Koln

After our Rhine cruise we drove in the coach to Koln (Cologne). Cologne is well-known for a few things, including perfume (4711 in particular), its Roman origins (as a colony – hence the name) and for its twin spired Gothic cathedral. We stopped for a little over an hour in the main square.

The cathedral houses the bones of the three Magi ...

Visiting old friends

This is not a great adventure, more a welcome back.

It is great to be back in Villiprott to visit our old friends since the 70ies. Now I have been staying with them for two weeks and we have done a lot of different things. This part of Germany have many interesting places to visit, both nature and culture.
Philip's stag tour

Straight from finishing work with COLT, I went to V festival. No pics, and you can get stories directly, but I then flew straight out on Monday to meet Philip, Lawrence and Elias in Germany to catch up on Philip's stag do. The plan is a week-long tour through Epernay & Reims France (I missed that bit), Köln, Kerpen, Nürberg etc through ...

This NOT the last day of my trip. Did not get home

... lined up in a slow-moving line for my Lufthanasa flight to Frankfurt, Germany and off the gate. But, no gate was posted. No one had answers. The only things that were clearly marked outside the gate was Guiness Beer at the Irish pub. The 2:10 pm departure time came and went and all of us German-bound passengers are wondering what’s going on. Finally, officials show up and we gather that the flight is late coming in, but who knows ...

... middle of nowhere. I had a cool talk with some police officer; he wanted me to trade out my Dalhi Lama book for a shortened edition of the Bible. "Jesus is the only way!" Crazy cops...By the time I actually get to Bonn, it's too late, so thank god my grandma lives there. The next day I try to go find the American Embassy...Not in Bonn. Damn it. They tell me I have to go to Düsseldorf or Berlin or wherever else. So ...

Only 5 exciting weeks left

... 2, 2005 Julie, Terry, and I met some of our buddies from the Fachhoschule here. Rheinkultur is the huge, free music festival that is held in the Rheinaue Park each summer. I think it is the largest free music festival in Europe. There are four different stages, a techno music area, another dance area, and rows of food and beverage stands! I was told the reason admission is free is because they make so much money off the food and drinks. They also had a bungee jump, and we ...
