Berlin, Germany

Hello Well yesterday was a very sad day for us, having to pack up and leave Lucca! To make us feel a little better the weather was horrible, pouring with rain and very miserable! We tried to call a taxi to take us to the station but only got a recorded message so had to arm ourselves with umbrellas and walk to the taxi rank and ask him to come back to our apartment to collect our luggage before heading to the station. As usual we gave ourselves far more time than we needed and so spent 20 min...

Berlin

Hello We were on a 5.15pm flight out of Berlin, so after packing up and checking out, we left our bags at the Hilton and walked to "The Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe". It is the most amazing place, above ground it is a small city block filled with 2,711 concrete stalae, approx 1m by 1.5m (from memory) which you can walk through from all directions (a bit like a concrete maze) All the stalae (black concrete blocks) are different heights(from flat to 2.2m high) and separated by a walk...

Berlin, what a whirlwind

We arrived in Berlin on Saturday morning. On Sunday, Randy and I went on a six hour, total city tour with our guide, Jeremy. He is originally from the U.S., but he lives in Berlin now. He is a total riot, and we had a great time with him. We saw the Brandenburg gate, part of the Berlin wall that is still standing, lots of really interesting buildings and architecture. We had no idea that so many buildings in Berlin were ten years old or less. Berlin's a happpening city! We also saw lots of mo...

Day 2 - Back to the airport and northbound we go..

So, 6:00 am came oh so fast, as I couldn't actually fall asleep until around 3:00-4:00 am. The night before, while in Munich, we took a taxi and went downtown to eat dinner. The restaurant was quite interesting and the waitresses wore the typical german long frock dress, which happened to be forest green, with a white shirt underneath, some quite lower cut than others, and the waiters wore the typical high-waisted pants, also forest green, with white shirts. And it was very loud. We asked for...

Berlin Day 3 - SO much history to remember....

Ok so I know I'm DAYS behind in my blogging. I’ve NEVER done well at keeping a journal. So I’m going to write as much as I can as fast as I can and see if I can catch up.

On Sunday, we took a guided tour through Berlin to learn about the history of the Third Reich, when Hitler took over and the Nazi reign of terror was in charge. Basically, it was a day of memorials. I will pause here to let you know that history is my worst subject. Always has been. It is closely followed ...

Day 4 - Palaces!!!

So Monday, we decided to take another guided tour (with the same company, New Europe, which is great by the way) to this town called Potsdam. Now, before the tour, I had never heard of Potsdam, except when my friend Wendy told me to visit because she had been and loved it. And I'm SO glad we did. Potsdam is filled with royal palaces from the Prussian era. But let me just tell you, we only THOUGHT we walked the two days before. Yea right.

So we were to meet at the Starbucks again over b...

The Poznan Clock is Awesome

Very long drive today. Spent almost all day on the bus from 7am till 7pm! And bad traffic too! Did have a stop for lunch and a look-see at Poznan. Was so excited that I got to go to Poznan-have heard about their town hall clock and really wanted to see it as it doesn't go every hour-only at noon-and we only just made it in time!! First you need to know the story of the clock. The story goes that a young boy (goat herd) of Poznan, lost control of his goats and they ran amok through the town. O...

Love the Berlin People

Today started with an optional excursion to the Reichstag Dome (on top of the German Parliament building). Went through an awfully strong security check just to go to the roof to look at the views. And their wasn't much to see because of the fog. Not really worth it. We then went over to the Jewish Memorial. At first it just looks like a pile of concrete blocks-but once you walk inside you realise the ground slopes or 'undulates' and the blocks are different sizes and heights from small to re...

From Dresden to Berlin

Berlin - Saturday, May 14

Our escape from Dresden wasn't nearly as painful as the arrival. We figured we might have missed a turn or two coming in. You think!?? We found ourselves on the Autobahn and on our way. We encountered construction and congestion about 50 kilometres into the trip. We came to a complete stop on a bridge. Oh happy day for me! Judy was calm and collected as usual. We continued on in stop and go traffic for quite a while. It did give me time to take pictures of t...

Excellent service and lovely location

from A TripAdvisor Member
I work in the international 5 star hotel industry and was highly impressed by service standards! Really friendly, pro-active and proffesional staff. Located in the vicinity of many sights it is worth a true recommendation.

Fantastic Berlin Hilton

from jesmas
Wow! what a brilliant hotel. we stayed here over christmas 2004 and had a fantastic time. the location is ideal for all major attractions and the staff are the friendliest you could find. nothing was too much trouble for them and everyone spoke brilliant English. the rooms are all roomy, fresh and impecably clean. trader vic's bar was a wonderful place to relax at the end of a days sightseeing. the italian restaurant 'fellini's' is fantastic and the health club and swimmimng pool are well worth a visit. what can i say - both my husband and i and my 3 children had the most wonderful time and will definately be visiting the berlin hilton again!

Excellent Choice

from wigangirl
Just returned from Berlin, the staff and facilities at this hotel are excellent. We paid extra for a dome view room which was well worth it, the bathroom was spotless and of a wonderful design. We ate in the Italian restaurant there and this was also brilliant. The breakfast was also excellent, great choice and great service. The only down point is the mini bar, if you move one thing you are charged for it, the reception dealt with this efficiently. Cant wait to sample another Hilton Hotel if they are all to this standard.

Excellent hotel

Spend new-years eve here. Stayed at the executive floor. The lounge is not really big enough when all rooms are booked. However the loungestaf is excelent, helpfull, friendly and polite (this is rare for hotels in Berlin). If you're traveling to Berlin and are willing to pay for good service, stay at the Hilton!

First Class Hilton

We stayed at the Berlin Hilton from 6 August to 11 August. The hotel is in a superb location with the U2 U-bahn directly outside and the U6 line around the corner. Checkpoint Charlie, the Reichstag and the Brandenberg gate are all within 15 mins walk but the U-bahn means that there is easy access to these and the rest of Berlin if you don't fancy the walk. A number of bar / cafes are in the immediate vacinity but these did not detract from the peace and quiet. The hotel room was very nice although we only had a view of the inner courtyard rather than the Gendarmenmarkt, (25 euros extra per night for view). Any request was dealt with straight away and the cleanliness of the room or the hotel could not be faulted. Beware the computerised mini-bar which charges your account the moment you move any of the drinks etc. (All resolved once I explained the problem to the staff). We would certainly stay there next time we are in Berlin.

Excellent Location

from Whinbrook
Large hotel in excellent location for the 'real Berlin', best museums, historic locations, the old East Berlin and new architecture and shopping districts on your doorstep. Comfortable rooms (great toiletries). Food was very good, especially the hotel's Italian restaurant and the huge varied buffet breakfasts were excellent. Well located for public transport - metro stop right by hotel. Friendly efficient staff made for a superior base.

One of the great Hiltons

from A TripAdvisor Member
An excellent Hilton property. The rooms are large, modern and many with a fantastic view on the "Gendarmenmarkt" and the cathedral there. The staff are very pleasant and extremely efficient, and they sure know how to treat HHonors Gold members: Full upgrades, complimentary breakfast and welcome gift in the room. Also, the location is ideal for excursions around berlin, be it on foot or by underground (which stops right outside).

Superb Hotel/Location

Stayed at the Hilton Berlin 18/19 April 2003 and it was perfect. Staff/location/room/facilities. As a frequent traveller we expect v.high standards from our hotels and the Hilton met everyone. We were on a bed/breakfast basis on the executive floor and it was well worth the extra. The breakfast was huge and superb quality. The location is also superb. The hop on hop off tourist bus leaves from just outside of the hotel - taxi's are always on hand should you prefer. Across the road is a selelection of bars/cafe's and next door to the hotel is the best chocolate shop in the world. What more can I say, I would recommend this hotel a hundred times over.

Pleasantly professional

from A TripAdvisor Member
Although it truly is a large hotel, the Berlin Hilton's staff is more than capable of making one feel welcome. I found the staff to be highly professional and polite. The front desk staff, the bell hops, the cleaning staff, and the attendents at the breakfast hall (great food, by the way) were all delightful. Regardless of the language of the conversation--English or German, I observed that guests were always treated well.

The rooms are functional and quite clean. The business center is well equiped. However, I have to admit that, beyond breakfasts, I didn't take advantage of the restaurants. Therefore, this review will end here.
