Heavily Used Convention Hotel
I didn't have any specific problems at the Hyatt Regency, but certainly wasn't impressed. From my first impression - a small smelly lobby dominated by the bar, to checkout where it took almost five minutes to find me in the system to print out my bill, everything was below average. As another reviewer mentioned, the elevators are slow. Sometimes they don't move, and other times they go up a few floors only to return to the lobby.
The actual room was fine, but old and in need of renovation. The bedspreads were stained in a few places and the bedframe creaked when I sat down. The carpet felt grimy and damp and I didn't dare walk around in bare feet. The bathroom was the oldest part of the room - cracked tiles in a few places, peeling caulk in the shower and hard water stains around the showerhead.
This hotel doesn't seem to be up to the regular Hyatt standard. It is desperately in need of a room renovation. The location is fine, but given the other opportunities in downtown Tampa, I would not stay here again.
A little out of the way, but, great service
Stayed for four days. Room was clean and staff was helpful and friendly. Elevators are a bit slow, so use the stairs. Food was average.
No real problems at this Hyatt. I would recommend it if you have to go to Tampa. If you play golf, Northdale Golf & CC is a nice course to visit.
Great place to stay!
Even though I had gotten this room through Priceline the staff were as friendly as any hotel staff I have encountered. After receiving my reservations, I called the hotel to make specific requests such as non-smoking rooms, king size bed, etc. and they treated me in the same way as if I were paying full price.
They have a doorman (Antonio) who is simply terrific. We had several questions and he graciously answered them all.
If you don't want to eat breakfast in the hotel, there is a great place just 3 blocks north of the hotel called First Watch that serves excellent and reasonably priced food.
The hotel was very nice and I would not hesitate to stay there again.
I stayed at this hotel for a convention from November 17-November 19, 2004 and I am very glad the convention was held here.
The check-in process was very smooth and efficient. I arrived at 1:00pm and went to the front desk to see if I could check in early. They only had smoking rooms at that time, so I declined. She let me sign all the paperwork so all I had to do was go back to get the room key at the appropriate check-in time. I went back at 2:45pm and the key was ready. The front desk staff were very helpful, knowledgeable, and friendly. The girl that assisted me (Jennifer I believe) provided me with exemplary customer service.
I was given a room with one king size bed on the 8th floor. I found the room to be very spacious, well-appointed, and smelling very nice. The entire room was very clean. I did not notice any wear and tear or signs of aging. The people that noted that in the prior reviews must be inspecting every nook and cranny of the hotel. The housekeeping staff did a wonderful job.
Now in regards to parking. When I arrived valet was already full ($13.00 with in and out privileges). The young valet attendant was very friendly and detailed in giving me directions to the parking garage. The parking garage is connected to the hotel by a walk way to the third floor. It is $9.50 per day with no in and out privileges. When you stay at a hotel in a large urban area you have to expect to pay parking fees just as the ones charged by this hotel.
The lobby is nice with lighted landscaping and cascading waterfalls. The banquet staff were very prompt and courteous. The food during the banquets was phenomenal. I did not eat at the restaurant in the hotel (Avanzare) or visit the pool or work out facilities on the 5th floor, so I am unable to comment on those.
The location is right in the heart of Downtown Tampa in an area known as Tampa City Center. We walked to some downtown restaurants for lunch and we walked a few blocks to take the trolly ($3.00 round trip) to Channelside and Ybor City for dinner.
I would recommend this hotel to all of my friends, family members, and work associates. I was with 20 people from my job and everyone commented about the positive experience they had at this hotel. Great customer service, spacious clean rooms, and a great downtown location makes this hotel one of the best in Tampa Bay!
Friendly Staff, Nice Room, Great Price
We got our room at the Hyatt for $50 on Priceline, and I was nervous about getting stuck in a crummy room due to the comments from others on this site. Much to our relief, we had a very nice room, and the staff, particularly the front desk and the concierge, were very friendly, welcoming, and helpful. It is true that this hotel is showing some signs of wear in public areas on the upper floors compared to other Hyatts, but our room was quite nice and we would definitely stay there again.
Great Rooms, Friendly Staff
I got this room on priceline for just $75, a great bargain. Room was lavishly decorated, sizeable bathroom; I stayed only one night and as a plane enthusiast enjoyed the view of the airport; the planes noise was not audible at all.
No WiFi yet, but it will be available on selected floors shortly (by end 2004) and currently wired broadband is available for a $10 charge in all rooms.
A great bargain on priceline and I would have happily paid the rack rate for the room I ws allocated.
Nice but watch the parking
The hotel was clean from the room to the workout area to the pool. The pool and hot tub have a nice downtown urban view. Staff was very friendly and accomodating. One thing though, watch the parking, at the hotel it is $12 plus tip for valet with in and out priviliges. You can find a parking garage on Whiting but no in and out priviliges.... or better yet if there for a weekend park on the street. The meters run 8-8 Monday through Saturday. Sunday 1-5. Totally worth if if you can get a good rate here through travel comparison sites or bid at priceline.
Facility showing wear, but great staff
I just returned from 4 nights at the Tampa Hyatt. I placed a $45/nt bid on Priceline and got this facility. I had to keep reminding myself this is a "business" hotel so the pool is totally unimpressive and restaurants too pricey. I thought I might have been given a lower-quality room since I was a Priceline guest, but a tour of other floors quickly revealed the same soiled carpets and torn wall coverings. The elevators made some pretty scarry sounds and I can only guess that other guests endored the same rock-hard bed I did. Hyatt could learn a thing or two from Starwood hotels. What was truly representative of the Hyatt name was THE STAFF! Yes - valet parking is the only option (if you want to come/go several times during the day) but I would call from the room and by the time I got to the lobby my car was waiting on me. The Concierge, Door Men, etc were all very personable. Room service was very accommodating and never took more than 20-30 minutes. Housekeeping was friendly and responded promptly to several requests. Note: This facility has replaced the common 4-cup drip coffee makers with the one-cup-at-a-time dispensers. I think these are terrible and told them as much. I hope this isn't a trend that will catch-on throughout the hotel industry. In summary, if location isn't a concern (and as one Trip Advisor has already said - downtown Tampa doesn't have much to offer because Channelside wasn't what I expected) and you can get a great rate, then this Hyatt is acceptable. And oh, don't confuse the downtown Hyatt with the one located on Westshore - which is a resort hotel with all the vacation amenities.
Good overall hotel experience
I was in Tampa for a week and the Hyatt Regency was one of the host hotels. I found the staff to be very friendly and helpful. On my first night I noticed the air conditioner was making a weird noise. The next morning I informed the front desk, and by the time I returned, the problem was fixed. Bob, the engineer, even left me a handwritten note with his card, in case I had any further problems. The room was what I would expect from a Hyatt. Nice size, clean, king bed was ok. Ordered room service pretty much every night, and they were always friendly and prompt. The food never took longer than 30 minutes. They have turndown service every night, which I usually declined since I was in the room (but they offered me chocolate mints anyway :) Only complaint I have is that the valet is $13 a day! I asked about self parking and they told me it was $9 a day, and I wouldn't be able to take my car in and out. So I was forced to valet (for 5 days!). There is a bar and resturant, but I didn't spend much time in either. BUT they do have a starbucks downstairs, which I enjoyed.
Would recommend the Hyatt Regency
We found the Hyatt Regency excellent - it suited our two day visit, especially as it is in a good Downtown location. (However Downtown Tampa is about as dull a place as you could wish to find!) Only the museums rescued our stay - shopping there is non-existent. The hotel room was spacious and comfortable, and the staff were friendly and helpful. We had no problem with our Internet booking which we found at a great rate.
