Historical Traveler Reviews Hilton Rotterdam Hotel
Dirty Hilton Rotterdam
Dirty and shabby old fashioned rooms. Staff were quite rude (surprisingly for the Dutch). They also charged me twice for the room and were shocked that I amde a fuss and demanded the money to be refunded. Never again will I stay in a Hilton.
Extremely Disappointed - Not worthy of it's Star Rating
I stayed at The Hilton in Rotterdam last Saturday and I have to say how extremely disappointed I was.
The Hotel is extremely dated and whilst I understand the difficulties with the exterior there is simply no excuse for the shabby appearance internally. Our room was clean and the bathroom was quite nice but the remainder of the room was in serious need of refurbishment. This applied even more to the breakfast room which looked as if nothing had been done to it for about 25 years!
I was surprised that the Hotel had only two lifts (one of which wasn't working when we arrived on Saturday afternoon) and on Sunday we waited for over 5 minutes for a lift as they were all full as they passed our floor.
The Breakfast was a complete shambols. We were not shown to a table and when we arrived a woman simply told us to "sit at a table for two if you can find one". The fruit juice was in need of replenishment and there were no plates on the buffet table. I had to find a waitress and ask for plates and then when they were eventually brought out several of the dished on the hot buffet menu were empty and some of what was there had gone cold. We waited half an hour to for someone to offer us tea and coffee and there were clearly not enough staff on duty deal with the amount of people in the restaurant. I feel that this is quite unacceptable. It may be that there was a particular reason as to why the restaurant was so busy but your management should be aware of the situation and deal with it accordingly. There were no managers to be seen in the vicinity.
All in all I was extremely disappointed. I have always had good experiences at Hilton Hotels and feel very let down on this occasion. The Hotel is clearly not worthy of it's Star Rating!
Rotterdam hilton good value for money
i am from london and travel every year to rotterdam carnival in july
I usually travel with a group of people and we use this hotel all the time
excellent room rates have not changed at all since we have been going to the carnival for the last 4 years !
rooms are spacious and lovley bathrooms and amenities
buffett breakfast good choice of the usual bacon eggs pancakes etc...
excellent location 10 mins walk from central station and good shopping areas
not bad as such but the hotel could do with upgrading its public areas as very outdated 70s style
lifts have to wait far to long to get up and down and as hotel has about 10 floors whos using the stairs!!! hahaahah
apart from that i wopuld recommend to everyone looking for value for money
but not fancy so if you want luxury try the westin a 5 min walk away
rates are higher but hotel is a higher grade !
Nice room, fine location
Considering I got a weekend offer at a considerably reduced price, price/value was quite satisfactory. Wouldn't have said the same if I had to pay the regular room price. Room was ok and well cleaned, so was the bathroom, and the beds were good, but all in all really nothing above the ordinary. The prices in the room minibar was just simply a rip-off, and the internet service for the guests was below par: bureaucratic, cumbersome and far too expensive for somebody just wanting to spend a few minutes checking their mail. There was a web hookup for a pc in the room, but most people still don't travel around with a personal pc on their vacation!
What did you do to my handbag??!!
My name is Maria de Lurdes and I'm from Portugal. Last Summer I went to Netherlands and I chose this hotel because I had lots of good references about it. It was unbelievable what happened to me!!!!
I was at the breakfast lounge, at the hotel, and I confidently left my handbang by the table, I went away from my place to go to the buffet.
I feel sorry to say that when I came back my handbag HAD BEEN STOLEN, yes, this happened INSIDE THE HOTEL.
I immediately reported this fact to the front desk and some hours later, after watching the security video, the hotel manager concluded that two aliens, obviously NOT GUESTS, easily sneaked inside the breakfast lounge, and no security stopped them.
More than a year after I still wait from the hotel the explanations and the compensation that they owe me.
This was a very sad chapter to me and to all my family and I can't understand I could this happen inside this "great" hotel.
Quite disappointing for a Hilton
We were impressed by the good prices and ease of use the Hilton website offered, so when we turned up to the hotel, which hasn't been decorated since it appeared to have been built as some kind of homage to the Trump Tower (badly) in the 80s, we were pretty disappointed. The hotel is in bad need of some kind of renovation - even a few lights in the lobby would be a start. The rooms are no better, scuff marks on the walls and doors, cheap looking furniture badly in need of repair or replacement etc. I'm sure that it got it's 4 stars with ease when they awarded them in the 80s, but they wouldn't get them today.
On the plus side the buffet breakfast was varied, and better than some we have seen on recent stays at other hotels. We're not sure it really lived up to the claims made by other tripadvisor users but it was good. Just make sure the breakfast is included in the price as apparently paying for a full price deluxe room doesn't always get you breakfast. Paying a highly discounted room rate does, full price is another matter!
Also beware of the late checkout mentioned on the Hilton site on certain deals because in this hotel late checkout is the same as normal checkout! HBO and ESPN are also not offered in this hotel despite being listed as features on the Hilton site.
All in all a disapppointing experience and we left feeling a little ripped off.
Bland, but OK
I have stayed here regularly on business over the last few months.
The building looks uninviting, and the decor is dated and rather tired.
However, the location is good, the staff are courteous and the service is efficient. The rooms are fine, bathrooms are quite nice.
Room service food is OK, and the buffet breakfasts are great.
It is just a bit soulless - a typical business hotel.
I would agree that the Westin is better, but then it is quite a bit more expensive, plus the Hilton has a better selection of English TV channels !
Trying to be more than it can be
First of all, if you can try and stay at the Westin. Everyone I spoke to raved about it. It wasn't possible for me this trip as it was sold out becasue the Film Festival was on and I can sort of see why. When I checked in at the Hilton I asked for a quiet room and was assured I was getting the best room available. It was on the 5th floor and had a noisy mini-fridge which I immediately unplugged once I saw the outrageous prices they wanted for a bottle of water and the air conditioner had a rattle in it. That took longer to unplug but I made sure someone came up and closed it dow.The good news was that the windows opened and I really didn't need the heater on as the temperatures were rather pleeasant. The bed was great and comfy and the bathroom was okay though it had seen better days. The bad news is that my room faced a line of bars or discos that were open until 6am and attracted a lot of car traffic honking horns and playing loud music. Now to be fair one didn't hear them as much when the windows were closed, however it meant sleeping in a virtually airless room. My rate at 139 Euros included tax but not the city tax of 6.50 (which I feel is misleading as they quoted me a rate that was tax inclusive-I argued it at checkout to no avail) and it also included breakfast. This is where the Hilton earned some badly needed points with me. The buffet is very varied and has everything you could possibly imagine. Once done with breakfast it was very easy to skip lunch entirely. The lobby also doubles as a restaurant and looking at the menu I was shocked to see how VERY expensive it was. Out of sight as a matter of fact. Also I asked the front desk about Internet access and was told it was 5Euros for fifteen minutes or 9Euros for 30...etc in their 2 PC business centre. Highway robbery. When I asked about an Internet cafe in the area I got a disingenuous reply of having to go to Kinkos' up the street which is four blocks away...etc. One of the guests overheard the conversation and immediately directed me to an Easy Internet Access shop with 100 PC's that is part of a Subway Sandwich place. It was literally around the corner where the charge was 1 Euro per HOUR!!! Needless to say that is where everyone went to. Would I stay at the Hilton again? Definitely not. I would hold out for the Westin or the New York Hotel which is a little farther out but has great character and, which by the way, is a terrfic place to go and have dinner. It has a huge brasserie with good food, reasonable prices and attracts the artists, movers and shakers of the city. Apparently the guest rooms are great fun as well as no two are the same and very comfortable. The hotel overlooks the water which would be an added bonus.
Luxury in Rotterdam
Stayed at the Hilton in October 2004 and was very satisfied.
The rooms were nice with a large bed and lots of pillows, the bathrooms was clean, had a large tub and a radio. New towels every day and slippers and bathrug for free use.
Beakfast was excellent with whatever you can imagine. Great location.
Great hotel in a wonderful city
Stayed here June 04 in an executive room. It was brand new and very spacious. The hotel is located right next to the shopping area and most of the cloths are around 40% cheaper than London. They don't have a restaurant but we had an excellent dinner in the the bar. The lobby has an interesting 70's feel about it but it works. Rotterdam is a definate must if you are going to Holland. I highly recommend the Euromast although if you are scared of hights like me you will be trembling when the cabin gets to the top. The zoo with its new aquarium and the boat cruises through the docks were really nice.

I did what any circus-obsessed girl does when she knows there is a circus festival on.
I spent most of my day there. In fact, not alone actually.

Woke up to find us sailing by the breakwater into Rotterdam. Rotterdam is the largest container port in the world, and it really is a sight. Ships of every kind. It was a 30 mile trip into Rotterdam. The last three miles into Rotterdam was a work of art by our captain. He had to turn our ship around, and sail it in backward.
