Where does the time go in Pushkar

One tip for travelling around India on a bus, DO NOT sit near the front where you can see what the driver can see!!! Its best to look out the side of the bus where you cant see the crumbling mountain roads, oncoming wagons on both lanes, motorbikes, forced off the road and buses hat play chicken with you. You just have to sit back and believe in the ability and skill of the driver, that look like they love it. Some of the manouvers are something Shipley dreams about making. We arrived in Push...

I love Varkala!

The journey to get here started oot a bit frightening, and started with my destination being completely different. I took an overnight train from Madurai (had to return there from Kodaikanal), first class, non AC, for 10 hours. Trains always scare me a bit, and night trains are way worst, i never know what to expect (every single train ive been on seems to be different), who to expect. I was safe though, in a cabin with 3 ...

Varkala, India

Life's a beach. Sun, sand, sea, sunburn, swimming, sweating, more sand and a little bit more sweating. This cliff top perched palm tree grove collection of cafes reminds me more of Thailand than India. It's very much a travellers sanctuary with a hippy vibe and laid back attitude but fun all the same. Chai Chai Chai, coffee coffee. There also seems ...

Amma's Ashram - A spiritual center

... disheartened at the fact that I will not receive a hug from her, given with such love that it has had such a powerful effect on so many of those who have received it. This unconditional love that she pours into people through her hugging has made her a unique individual. I have heard tales of people completely breaking down while receiving this love, this simple but powerful act coming from a woman with such a big heart. Of ...

dangerous bus journey to Kollam

We had a lets say interesting 5h journey to Kollam, which included really scary driving - we think he thought he was an express bus that was not allowed to slow down or stop and therefore had to overtake whatever the danger and the magic horn would keep him safe. I guess it did not help that we didn't have a seat and were standing in the aisle! After a couple of hours the bus pulled into a bus station and told everyone to get off... obviously we did as we were told and just ...

Backwaters of Kerala

... and traveled to India to bury her past and start a path to a new beginning. In the mornings, I'd stroll into the shop and join the gang for chai. At night, I'd head there after dinner with the Ashram people, and we'd talk into the late hours about anything from Indian culture to American politics. I ended up picking out a tiny gem stone (moon stone) and within a few hours they made me a pendant that will always remind me of my time spent in Varkala. In all my years ...

Monsoon beach weather

dear all, mike has the short straw and only a shortish entry this time round - no crying in the cheap seats! the usual short version: - train from madurai to kollam in kerala - cockroach ridden room lead us to a ayurvedic resort - an evening in monsoon backwaters on a small boat - train to varkala further down the coast in search of beach and found mostly corruption and the best bit... a casual 8 hour cross country jaunt took us from the dramatic ...

Messing about in houseboats

... after we started off we were served an enormous meal of various delicious vegetable curries, each a Keralan speciality and containing coconut, curry leaves and cardamom as the main flavourings. An afternoon snack of fried battered bananas and sweet tea kept us on until dinner which was again enormous and beautifully prepared and included some simple fried fish. There was little to do except watch the world go by and read, but that was ...
