Where does the time go in Pushkar

One tip for travelling around India on a bus, DO NOT sit near the front where you can see what the driver can see!!! Its best to look out the side of the bus where you cant see the crumbling mountain roads, oncoming wagons on both lanes, motorbikes, forced off the road and buses hat play chicken with you. You just have to sit back and believe in the ability and skill of the driver, that look like they love it. Some of the manouvers are something Shipley dreams about making. We arrived in Push...

Varkala II

... week. We spent a lot of time sittting outside our hut watching a pair of coucal (jungle cuckoos) building a nest. We watched kites and dolphins and fishing boats under a palm tree inhabited by a chameleon. We also met a lot of lovely people, both Indian and foreign, so that it became harder and harder to leave, but we managed it eventually, and the next blog should be with you tomorrow or the day after, from Kumarakom, where we are hoping to see lots of flapping things.

At the Taj in Varkala

... but what would I do if they were?" When the pool attendant didn't take any notice I reasoned that there wasn't anything amiss but it is somewhat disconcerting to be somewhere where there is actually some reason to pay attention to gun shot sounds. A reminder that we are so fortunate to live in part of the world where orchard air guns meant to scare away birds don't make people duck for cover. Varkala has a rather nice beach side ...

I've Got A Lovely Bunch Of Coconuts

... coconut flesh was moist and delicious, the best i've ever tasted, nice one. Then the song came to my head and stayed for two days: Hoi've got a lo-ve-ly bunch o' coconuts. There they are a-standin' in a row. Big ones, small ones, some as big as yer head! Anyway, we made it to the festival where a woman was singing and dancing Kathakali style and people were starting to file in fast, some stopping to buy prayer offerings for Shiva from makeshift stalls on entrance ...

Elephant Festivals and Big Beaches

... to this..... I think it just comes down to who has payed the bribe and who hasn't. I took 2 Yoga classes while I was here too. These hour and half session were pretty good until I pinched a nerve in my neck. I think this mishap is on the same scale as ping-pong or chess injuries. I am getting old! I will try again later. I'm keen to do it ...

Amma's Ashram - A spiritual center

... she is so much than just an Indian lady that hugs her fellow men and women, for she uses her money to improve the lives of many unfortunate people all around the world, from Tsunami and earthquake victims to homeless men and women and people with disabilities of varying nature. She even sent a million dollars to the USA to support the victims of hurricane Katrina. Most activities have a set time when they take place, namely meal ...

... hotels tourist homes or guest houses. So you can imagine our confusion when we arrived late in the evening, it was already dark, walked in to a "hotel" and just got laughs in answer. After a few places we noticed our mistake, and quit making asses out of ourselves ;) So from Mangalore we continued to Kannur, a quite small town (pop. only half million :) Also there we stayed only one day, not much to do or see. Then, after a 15 h train and bus ride we finally arrived to one of the nices ...

Houseboat in the Keralan backwaters

... being ferried about on a boat feeling the gentle breeze against your face and hearing the water lapping about you and every one would sound cliched here. Tranquil, serene, plain relaxing - all these would do. It was like letting out the biggest sigh I could muster finishing off with a wide, contented grin. We tucked into the fruit bowl and watched Kerala pass by at the side of us. Fishermen hurling nets over the side of small boats, women doing their washing in the river, kids ...

On the cliff

At the pen counter (pens here are apparently very valuable, since we are inevitably asked a few times a day by adorable little kids who don't say hello, but "one pen?" there was a lady in her bright orange ONE store shirt to get the pens out of the glass case, write you a ticket and ...
