Our Close To Home Adventures

Hi,

Since we won't be traveling extensively until Donn retires, I thought it might be fun to show everyone some of the wonderful camping and outdoor recreational opportunities that exist right outside our back door.

This is my first attempt at this so please bear with me as I share with you our wonderful weekend.
As you will see from the pictures we like to ...

Big Adventure -- White Water Rafting

... of the river. By the way, the river temperature was 5 degrees Celsius, or 41 degrees Fahrenheit.

We practiced in calm water, but quickly got to the fun stuff. The class 3 and class 4 rapids had huge "holes" and drops. We had a great time and were sorry that it had to end. The warm bus ride back to the put-in spot felt good, but the hot shower and hot chocolate were even better.

Sorry, no pictures, I do not have a waterproof camera.

... can actually watch a train coming out of the tunnel while the back end is still going in. The entry and exit are 15 meters above or below each other, depending on which way you are traveling.

Our next stop was Takakkaw Falls. At 254 meters (about 838 feet), it is one of the higher falls in Canada. Once again, the pictures do not do this falls justice. In the Cree native language Takakkaw means magnificent, and it really is. From just below ...

Things Happen -- Good News and Bad News

... from the coolant reservoir. All right, for you four-wheelers, a radiator hose.

Well, that is the bad news. The good news is, we could have been 30 miles back on Rogers Pass, or as originally planned, at the campground in the middle of Yoho National Park. The further good news is that the RV park owner called one of the tire shops in Golden. Next door to that tire shop is a diesel garage that is ...

Visiting Yoho National Park

... huge pile of rocks in the river bed so you can climb the mound and get a refreshing spray shower. Afterward we stopped at Natural Bridge, which is just that: a huge slab of rock that the river has slowly eaten holes in but you could cross the the river on it with a bit of hopping. Our final stop in Yoho was at Emerald Lake. The simple circuit around the lake is well done with interesting signposts explaining the environmental ...

Exciting Developments

... interacting with people as I have become accustomed to in my past positions. Hence, I started looking around and applying for some other jobs. Radium, British Columbia, Jasper, Banff, etc. Long story short, I got offered 3 jobs on Saturday!! Two of them for front desk positions at hotels in town, and one a part-time job at a liquor store in town. In the end, I decided to take one of the front desk positions at quite a nice 4 star ...

Summer's Comin'

It's been a silly few days I guess. Went out Friday night and lost my keys to where I stay, so that sucked. Got them back Sunday night which was good but unfortunate that I had to spend my two days off worrying about it. Ugh, my own fault but whatever. Saturday was pretty good because it was gorgeous outside. I walked over to the Bow River and then walked along the path along it until I found a sort of quiet spot about 20 meters from about 7 elk who were just lazily eating some grass ...

Golden, BC

We've arrived in Golden after a drive down Hwy 93 through the Rockies. We stopped at Athabasca Falls and Lake Louise as well as some spots in between. The drive was amazing. We took almost 100 pictures. I'll try to pick the best ones and upload them. I'll also add some for the other days.

My new home for the season

... make up most of the trails above the treeline. They work by creating a barrier for the snow laden wind which often sweeps across the alpine areas (above tree line) of the resort. The wind passes over the fence and bends down towards the ground, dropping much of the snow at the same time. After a good windy storm, it's not uncommon to find drifts of snow 1-2m deep and 4-5m wide running the entire length of the fence - and this can happen in one night. Job satisfaction has ...
