A little slice of the BIG Apple

2008-09-25 New York Rocks To get to the big city we opted to take the cheapest means of transport which turned out to be the train. A ticket from Montreal to New York Penn Station with Amtrac was almost half the price of the Greyhound and a quarter the price of a flight. The bus which was our first option takes almost 24 hours as apposed to only 12 hours by train in much greater comfort. Before we could enter the USA we had to get through the border crossing and we¡¯d heard that the US immigr...

I had the extremely appetisingly named "Bucket of Boat Trash ...

After a trip on the ferry across to Staten Island past the Statue of Liberty (and back) I was growing tired so headed back to the hostel (via a pharmacy for some throat sweets and tissues for my developing cold) and took ...

Dos and Don'ts of Times Square

... never quiet. The shops almost never close. Go and visit it early in the morning, in the afternoon and late in the evening. The odds are, if you spend enough time in Time Square you'll bump into someone you know, most likely yourself. It's not advisable to visit the Square on your own after dark. Do go two blocks further for food... Food on Times Square is fried. It sounds like a generalisation, but it's very close to the truth. If you get sick ...

Getting A Taste of The Big Apple

... and sidewalk vendors.  As we were a little hungry, we did what most New Yorkers do...had a hot dog from a cart vendor.  Munching on our hot dogs naturally attracted pigeons hoping for a stray crumb to drop but John made sure they understood they needed to look elsewhere.   We consulted our list of sites to see, checked the GPS and headed for Ground Zero.  We sat for a while on benches in front of an office building and silently contemplated the ...
