... But I digress... So the mother in law's purpose is to teach her new daughter in-law how to be a good wife and understand the wants, needs, moods and general whims of her son, because as Thembile explained to me, "No woman knows a man like his mother." The mother in law also instructs her new daughter in law of what is expected of her as a mother. On a serious note, Thembile told me that his own mother suffered greatly at the hands of her mother in law and husband's ...
Cape Town, Western Cape, South Africa sunsetss... we learned many other completely irrelevant ostrich facts that we thought we'd share with you (go ahead and throw them into your next dinner party conversations if you wish):
· One ostrich eyeball alone is bigger than the ostrich's brain. That would help explain why the ostriches we saw kept pecking at their shiny wire fence. We were told they do it for no other reason except that the wire is shiny...perhaps tomorrow it will be tasty(?);
· These ...
... would have no doubt received. Why is it that at every game there is always one loud, crude, ugly aussie yob supporting a mullet that makes you ashamed to call yourself Australian? Surely not all words start with the letter F? Australia should lock these people up not send them aboard. Just cringe worthy. So tucked safely away in our warm apartment the 4 of us watched the rest of the match before calling it a night, bringing to an end a very merry but drunken taster visit to Cape Town.
Cape Town, Western Cape, South Africa oliveramber...
Cape Town, South Africa brisko... Ours was brewed properly. Jody had a triple meal of kudu, springbok, and ostrich meat in a peppercorn sauce - two medallions of each, really big meal! I had a stuffed pepper with couscous, butternut squash, creamed spinach and mushrooms and onions. Also a really large meal. The amazing part was that the total meal, including the African beer, and 2 normal ...
Cape Town, South Africa blaineafrica... with huge mountains lining the coast. On the other side the mountains continue on to the Cape of Good Hope. To either side you can look down and see the beach suburbs and the crashing waves. We spent quite a lot of time ambling around, taking pictures of weird flowers, Dassies, and the views. On the far side of the mountain a great display of yellow flowers sprout up everywhere. It's definitely a nice day trip. Since the weather was ...
Cape Town, Western Cape, South Africa youngtravellers... there are either orphaned, abandoned, or from abusive homes. Those orphaned and abandoned tend to stay there until they are in their mid-late teens, whereas they work with the abusive parents to make them better and get their children back. One building we went into was for children under five years old. ~40 kids stayed there. We went in and there were children running everywhere! It was nuts to say the least. The toddler room was a bit depressing, though ...
Cape Town, Western Cape, South Africa brettoryg... people walking about, so it was really hard to take a nature break away from people when you're 30 minutes away from the restroom! We ate some lunch and dessert at the restaurant on top looking out with a fabulous view. Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden The oldest and largest botanical garden in S.A, and the first botanical garden in the world to achieve the status as a UNESCO World Heritage site. The best part about ...
Cape Town, South Africa sfrtwSo onto the rest of our time in Cape Town...which seems a lifetime ago now but I'll try and do my best to remember. The first event worth mentioning was taking the kids to the beach in our first week of being at the orphanage. I took Natasha (soon to become my favourite kid) and Charlie took Entle (also her favourite hehe). It was brilliant to take them out and see them have such a good time, quite a few of them had never been to the beach or on a train before so it was ...
Fish Hoek, South Africa alex_charlotte... I tried to take the cable car up Table Mountain, but it was so windy that it was closed. So our taxi driver took us to this nice view point and we got some nice pictures. Then we went to this street called Long Street that had a bunch of cool vintage stores and a marketplace. We pretty much just shopped all day. That night we went to Mama Africa, this awesome African restaurant. They served a lot of different meats like Ostrich, Warthog (a Pumbaa!), and Alligator ...
