It's all Greek to me...!

We arrived in Athens after flying from NY via a very quick transfer in London. Overnight flights are tricky and again we arrived zonked. I had a cold too so (again!) we took a nap. We woke late (oops!) but, hey, it's not as if we have to keep to a schedule, right?

Later in the evening, we explored the hotel and Bronte found two spas on …

... from there I took the train on line 2. I soon got off and walked a little bit to get at my resturaunt, 'Eden Resturaunt'. I had a Caesar Salad and then decided to walk to my next attraction which was was south-west of Acropolis; 'The Temple of Athena Nike'. 'Nike' meaning victory in Greek (Ha! I just taught you a new greek word!) and Athena who is the daughter of Zeus and Metis. Athena is the goddess of wisdom, courage, inspiration, civilization, warfare, ...

    Looks good, but!!!

First impressions count! Ours of Herodion was walking through a cloud of cigarette smoke at the front doors to get to reception. This was because the lobby and restaurant are smoke free but they allow smokers to sit on the ledge at the front door and puff away. Of course the smoke pours in when the doors open. I was then surprised to learn this hotel had smoking floors-wow is this the 80s still. The lobby and restaurant are beautiful but were unusable by me as an asthmatic as they constantly stank of smoke. Our room was clean, with plenty of storage space, but the beds were the most uncomfortable I've ever slept on(this was our 12th hotel on our 11month world trip). I asked the staff whether these were standard throughout the hotel and they were shocked to learn that I found then so uncomfortable. A 10cm mattress on a hard base isn't something I think most people will find comfortable. Sleeping was made even more difficult by the very loud air conditioner unit located within the central courtyard of the hotel. It turned on every 15 minutes and rattled away all night.
The staff are the reason this hotel is so highly rated. They are outstanding and will do almost anything to make your stay as enjoyable as possible. They moved us to a different room and while my bed was the same, my daughter slept on a pull out sofa lounge with a "normal" mattress and had a much better sleep for our last 2 nights.
The breakfast buffet is excellent, with a variety of choices to suit all tastes. The fresh OJ was a particular favourite.
This hotels location is also a plus. It's a 5 minutes walk to the Acropolis Museum and entrance and a few more to the subway. The roof top garden has a spectacular view of the acropolis, particular at night.
Would I stay in this hotel again, no I wouldn't, simply because of the smoking!

    Very good

    from

Loved the staff at the Herodion, and surprised/pleased by the modern lobby, and atrium restaurant. Rooms were tight, though, but we already expected that from researching on-line. Breakfast buffet quite good, with more than rolls, and coffee. It consisted of eggs, sausages/bacon (although a little limp and undercooked by US standards), fresh fruit, juices, cakes, cookies, kalamata olives, yoghurt, toast, cereal. A word of caution, though, as some of the rooms had a "sewer" smell in them ---ours didn't, but our friends did, and had to request another room. Location to the Acropolis and Plaka was great. Would return!

    Excellent!

    from

We stayed at the Herodion September 12 and 13, 2004. We found our room very comfortable and the daily breakfast had many delicious items to choose from. The staff were very helpful and accommodating. The location couldn't have been better. We were close to everything and were able to walk to all the sights. Their rooftop terrace was a treat. We would not hesitate to stay at the Herodion the next time we are in Athens.

    Good Location, adequate accomodation

    from

My husband and I spent 2 nights at the Herodion and found it to be fine, small but what we expected for Athens.

the breakfast was good, and the location was the best part. walking distance to Acropolis and plenty of good restaurants.

    Waste of Money

    from

Traveling around Europe is always a surprise, but this hotel was a joke. The rooms were small and crampped (and we even had the "suite"). The paint was chipping off the wardrobe and off the bathroom ceiling. It also smelled like sewage because there was some sort of drain in the middle of the bathroom floor. The television was static-y and there were no English channels. The phone had different services too, but they did not correspond with the buttons so I had to call front desk for everything (which by the way is 100). The decor was not very appealing either and there is absolutely no hotel parking. These may seem like trivial points, but for 230 Euro a night, save your money. However, the airconditioner worked and the staff was very friendly.

    Highly Recommended

    from

We spent 5 nights in early March 2004 and enjoyed our stay immensely.

The room was quiet even though it was on the street. The breakfast bar was great with lots of choices for different appetites. And we got great pictures of the Acropolis from the roof at night!

Comfortable and Functional, but a bit pricy

    from

This hotel caters for business people, and so it should at the high prices it charges (180 Euros per nigth, 20 Euros for breakfast). I stayed here for 5 nights in March 2004 and while I found it to be comfortable and well located for exploring the area around the Acropolis, it was a bit expensive. My room had a view of the Parthenon, but was right next to a school yard full of screaming kids. The area is pretty run down (though by Athenian standards this was probably up market). Local archieture consisted on elegant buildings right next to Scud missles attacks, most bizzare to have elegance and ruin side by side, but then this is a 3000 year old city ! There are lots of shopping precints to explore and excellent bakeries on ever corner. A payphone outside the hotel takes calling cards available from the nearby magazine stand, in case you decide to call home and don't want to pay high hotel charges. I recommend this hotel, but ask for a quiet room in advance.

    Comfy beds and great locale

    from

My husband and I stayed here in early Mar-04. I was pleasantly surprised by how nice everything was. Normally 4* Europe means 3* North America, but this really is a 4*! Our room was on an inner courtyard, so no view, but it was really quiet. The beds were super comfy, futon-like. The breakfasts were also very good (which isn't always the case in European hotels). My only advice is to get the hotel to fax their address in Greek letters to show the cab driver. Our's did not speak English and so we ended up at the Holiday Inn first (sounds like Herodian apparently).

    Great Hotel!

    from

Great hotel! My boyfriend and I stayed at the Herodion after staying at various hotels during our 2-week vacation. The Herodion was by far, our favorite. The room was a good size and was very clean, with all the amenities. The location is awesome -- right below the Acropolis and a few blocks from the main district of Plaka. We would definitely stay there again.

    Very Good

    from

Very clean hotel with friendly people to serv. Nice and warm rooms; very clean bathroom with small bath (difficult to sit down with two people at the same time :p).The breakfast is a buffet; everyday the same stuff, but enough choice. Hint : Don't taste the oranje juice, it's terrible! Overall A+ hotel !

    Awesome hotel

    from

My wife, infant daughter and I stayed at the Herodion in Nov. '02. The hotel is very nice and the pictures on the website do not do it enough justice.

The staff is courteous and the rooms are luxorious and clean.
