... in terms of distance and terrain, albeit there was a chillier feel. The Appenines seem every bit as hard as the Alps, though some of that may be due to accumulated fatigue and my cold. ... our elegant room and a bathroom big enough for ballroom dancing. I quickstep over to the shower and wash the grime of the day away.

We are near the Trebbia where Hannibal had a major battle. Of the 34 or 37 elephants he set out with, many had already died from the cold and exhaustion and only one it is believed survived this battle. After a day like today, I can understand why.

... 3.40 train to Milan. This is our last train of interrailing:( Can't say it's our favourite though, in fact it's probably the worst. The air conditioning consists of windows and the leather seats are not the nicest to sit on in the sweltering heat. Lucy thinks she is going to die, or she did until she fell asleep anyway.
