Bikaner, Rajasthan, India tonicastells... quilt laid on the sand. I mentioned earlier that in the desert the silence is deafening, well I mean that literally, I awoke during the night around 2 am to absolute silence, no crickets, no birds, no swirling of wind in my ears, nothing, in my half awake stupor I thought I'd gone deaf, it was that quiet.
I could write for hours about our desert experience the heat, the scenery and the people we met along the way. I could write about how camels chew the ...

Bikaner, Rājasthān, India seorajeshkumar... passed on the opportunity, shame on me, but I could not bring myself to try it. Other things, yeah. Camel milk just held no appeal whatsoever. We got back on the bus which took us to the hotel for dinner (rooftop restaurant). I didn't eat much, still worried about my stomach, but the meal I had was just all right, nothing special. (Ok, I chose the wrong time to try the non-veg option ;-)) Our tour leader basically told us not to leave the hotel ...
Bikaner, Rajasthan, India mikela... Temple" aka, Karni Mata. There are thousands of rats running around, doing what rats do best: eating, drinking, deficating. EVERYWHERE. This isn't a place where I would recommend to everyone, but personally, I found it to be one of the best temples I've seen. The temple itself was unspectacular, but how could something covered in rats possibly dissapoint?
Bikaner, Rajasthan, India brettpaton... I was scraping my feet clean (the floor was a bit dirty, you see) when some nice people let us know the infamous white rat had been spotted today, out the right hand door. We went, but he had already left. The crowd wandered off, and just as we were preparing to leave, our lucky rat made an appearance. We called everyone back, and they all seemed genuinely enthusiastic about its appearance. I wondered if the other rats got jealous, and then I wondered if my feet were clean enough.
Bikaner, Rajasthan, India waynekreger... is the name of the temple), an incarnation of another god, asked the god of death to restore to life the son of a grieving storyteller. Death god said no, so in revenge Karni Mata turned all dead storytellers into rats, thereby denying Death god of human souls. It's supposed to be good luck if a rat scurries across your feet, and not five minutes after we walked in I had one hop right onto my foot and hang out for a second before scurrying away. We ...
Bikaner, India youngtravellers... from Bombay who were working - tangentally - for a Bollywood movie - supplying firearms to the set. It was nice - but we were more than ready for Bikaner! On our way there, we stopped at the rat temple. For those of you who know me well, you know that I can handle many things that make others skwimish (cockroaches, snakes, spiders) so conquering my fear of rats was/is a huge step for me!! The rats run freely ...
Mandawa and Bikaner, India elizabethg... choices So tonight, we hop aboard another night train, which by chance, originates from here. As we wait for the train to come in, fireworks explode everywhere. Is this to say goodbye, is this for the wedding celebrations, or are they celebrating the circumcision of the young boys !!! This, we will nefer find out, and hopefully, even though we are not holding our breaths, nobody will be in our bed, or I will be the bear who states, WHO IS SLEEPING IN MY BED !!!
