Heading to the East Coast

We're decided to go to Hanmer Springs about 90 minutes north of Christchurch for the last three days. The weather is supposed to clear and be sunny until Wednesday when we return to Sydney. The weather cleared as we left Methven and our first stop was the Raikaia Gorge. With the rain that has been hitting the mountain regions, the river was fuller than most of the rivers we have seen. The host at the hotel had recommended we stop at Pegasus Bay winery on the east coast and we found it easily....

Relaxing at the Hanmer Hot Springs

We are up in the mountains enjoying some absolute relaxation in the Hanmer Hot Springs which opened in the 1880's. Today, they are more like swimming pools although fed by the hot thermal water. We spent the afternoon soaking in the mineral pools rich in sulphur, sodium, potassium and other bits of organic material. The temperature in the various pools ranges from 35 degrees to 42 degrees. The air temperature is around 20 and it is still windy, so the hot baths were very nice. We are heading ...

The Pancake Rocks on the West Coast

Waking on Tuesday morning, it was raining and overcast but we checked the weather on the west coast and it was clear and sunny, so we set off across Lewis Pass. The sun came out and it was blue skies just as we drove through the lower mountains. The road was pretty good, a few hairpin turns but we arrived in Greymouth around lunch. Not much of a town with a population just over 13,000. Originally it was built for the goldrush in the 1880's and then coal a few years later. The Grey River had f...

Soaking in Hot Springs

Hanmer Springs was a quick stop-off point on way to the north end of the South Island. It's famous for its hot springs and is surrounded by several ski-fields. The plan was to check-in and see whether we fancied hanging around for a couple of days.

Well, this just ended up being an overnight pit-stop plus a quick dip in the hot pools. The skiing didn't look fantastic and even Louise can only sit in hot thermal springs for so long without shrinking ...

THERE IS LIFE AFTER POTATOES!

... of rain it was nice to see the sun again. We found an interesting campground. It was more or less a school holiday retreat. The kind of camp you go to when you're in 6th grade and you all share a cabin and play Ghost in the Graveyard. Well, that's exactly what this place was like. There were a few other travelers but the first night it was mainly kids. We went into town that night and had a great dinner. The ...

Final destination - Hanmer Springs

... the forest at Hanmer Springs. It was so much fun but we were both a bit knackered after it so we checked ourselves into the Hot Springs spa and chilled out and soaked our tired bones. Having spent all our money we realised we couldn't stay at the campsite for a second night or we would have no fuel to get home so we had to find a spot to free camp it for the night.

Hamner Springs - First full day

... and ended in a circular short walk on the fir trail which took us through majestic Larch and pine trees. Although the weather was sunny there was an occasional wind that sounded like a paasing train as it swept down the valley into the Hanmer Basin. We returned to Hanmer around 1500 hrs and proceeded to the Thermal Spa and had a relaxing 2 hours sampling the ...

... long. So we waited, and waited and waited and eventually the plane landed but the aerobridge was broken... so we had ANOTHER gate change!!! Brett was very impressed at this stage!!! We flew into Christchurch over snow capped mountains, first time Brett has seen snow.. it was truly beautiful. The next day (Friday) we were on the Tranzalpine train from Christchurch to Greymouth - the other side of the south island. We enjoyed the scenery, the ...

... good choice). The springs are great.. and they have a whole range of hot water spring pools although some of them stink of sulphur and other minerals. Appearantly its all good for your body and skin etc. We made full use of the slide although i think the lifegaurd wanted to throw us out for messing about on it. From here it was another ...

Swimming with dolphins

Still on a buzz from the sky dive I head southwards. The weather gets colder the further south you go in NZ, I find this a very strange concept! After a long hot, boring day on the bus I have quick over night stop in Wellington, the capital city. Next day its off to Picton, the gateway to the south island. The ferry journey across is smooth and uneventful. I travel on to Kaikoura, which in Maori means "meal of crayfish". This ...
