We spent the night in a fantastic hotel in Christchurch, the Heritage Christchurch. The rooms are in a renovated government building with high ceilings and elaborate trim, sweeping staircases, and bank vault doors on the entrance to the lobby mens and ladies rooms! I got up at about 6:00 am and got my stuff together. I have really loved my time in Australia and it is with a touch of sadness that I am heading to the airport to leave for New Zealand. The tour bus was there to pick me up at the Heritage at 7:30 am. The tour company is called Canterbury Leisure Tours. The driver/guide warned us that the weather was "marginal" today for the whale watching cruise, but all of us on the tour bus were ready to give it a try, so we set out for the city of Kaikura. I got up at 6:00 am this morning for a day trip to Milford Sound on the West Coast of the South Island of New Zealand. I had arranged to fly on Air New Zealand to Queenstown on an early flight. The plan was to catch a sightseeing plane in Queenstown and fly to Milford Sound's airstrip, where I would take a couple hour boat tour of Milford Sound. ... We have lucked out with the clear skies, crisp and cool fall days, and the leaves are changing colors. We picked up the campervan that Stacy, Greg, Kat and Nate recommended from their trips. We are loving it. Brad hasn't let us eat a meal in a restaurant since we picked up the van. Simple spaghetti actually does taste great after so long.

... killing time until our train at 5.25pm. Once we dusted ourselves of, pulled our bikes upright, sweated to the train station, wondered where the rest of the train station was it being only about 1 carriage long, it was time for the train (most of which predictably did not fit on the platform). The train sped us the 58km into Christchurch avoiding the suburbs, getting lost and other nasty mishaps. We then managed to disembark and find the hostel with only one or two wrong turns.
