Took a day trip by car to visit a few Tulou clusters near where I was staying. The Tulou are absolutely stunning. Self contained multi-story villages. They all had wells in the interior courtyard as well as sometimes wells in the living spaces. The first group I went to was vey peaceful because it was earlier in the morning and not the huge tourist draw. Had a great time wandering around. Then I went to see "King Tulou" the claim to fame of which is that it's ******* huge. Like really ...

Fun and Tiring Day! ...

... some of the more well maintained ones as it sort of felt more authentic. It really was like stepping back in time being here with the cobbled stone floors with chickens running about.

Literally no sooner than had I dropped my bag in my currently powerless room than I was introduced to a tout wanting to sell me a tour of the local roundhouses. Unfortunately enlisting someone's services here is essential if you want to see the sights. the main ones are spread out ...

    Living like a Hakka

My first destination in real China was YongDing to look at the ancient Tulou houses of the Hakka people.

It took my about 8 hours by train to get there, and as I was unfamiliar with the train system, I ended up with a "standing ticket," which is exactly what it sounds like. Standing. 8 hours. "Bring it on," I thought, until of course 3 hours passed by and I realized it was going to be a very long night.

    The ...
