I would recommend this place to anyone visiting NYC. We would definitely stay here our next time in the city. Staff was helpful, location is excellent, and room was a good size and excellent view.

Great location, great hotel
We stayed at the Helmsley for the third time in 18 months and were again more than happy with it. The size of the rooms is excellent for New York, with plenty of space to walk around in both the double and twin rooms and the closet was a good size and had a bathrobe in it, and the traditional decoration suits my taste. I am comparing the size with the Waldorf which has the smallest double rooms I have seen in a long time. The hotel has a substantial feel. The staff are polite and efficient. The concierge doesn't work the longest of hours though he was helpful when he was there. The location of this hotel is lovely as it faces the Park at the front (the view from a room we stayed in last year of the Park was tremendous) and is adjacent to the Plaza which doesn't seem to please many of its guests although it costs a lot more. We haven't eaten in the hotel so we can't pass comment on the food. There isn't a turn down service anymore but I am more than capable of turning my own bed down and no mint means fewer calories!The Helmsley Park Lane is in a central location with a tube station located between it and the Plaze and Bloomingdales is only a few blocks away. Bloomingdales '40 Carrots' restaurant in the basement is a real find for lunch or a light late afternoon meal. Their salads are great (particularly the crabmeat one) and their frozen yogurt is the best we have ever tasted. The coffee yogurt is gorgeousand the blonde, cuddly waitress is just the nicest person.For really good food go to Luca's Restaurant which is on First Avenue at 89th. We have been eating there for about five years now and have never had a bad meal there yet. Great authentic Italian food as the owner, Luca, comes from Milan. Loehmann's is great for clothes bargains and is on 7th Avenue at 18th Street. Similarly Century 21 has some great finds but the surroundings are still upsetting outside. We found a great lunchtime restaurant in that area called Zeytuna which is a self service restaurant with so many different kinds of good food everybody is happy. It also has a great deli upstairs.I love New York!
Not worth it - inconsistent service/rooms
Do not make a discount reservation on line for this hotel - you receive the worst room. The first room I received on an upper floor had thread bare chairs, the bath tub was dirty, the sheets had hair on them, and the walls were very dirty (unknown brown smudges). It was shocking that a "4star" hotel would appear this way. When I complained I received a great room on the 10th floor - what a difference, it actually looked like the advertisements. Prior to my arrival they emailed me an upgrade coupon which upon my arrival was not applicable to my "on-line" reservation. The concierge and staff were mediocre - sometimes friendly and sometimes unhelpful and even rude. Not a good hotel - don't believe their advertisements. NY has lots of great hotels-even though the location is ideal - pass on this one.
They will get all of your money, or die trying
Stayed at the Park Lane for 4 nights in July 2003. The location was great but that's about all this place has going for it. As our taxi pulled up to the curb, the doorman ignored me when I asked for help with my family's luggage, and it wasn't until he saw my sister struggling with her suitcase that he picked it up and, setting it on the cart, left me and my parents to struggle with our own luggage. Hey, everyone deserves service, not only good looking 24 year old females!
Check in was a disaster... a female employee (that's as far as I can tell you because she wasn't wearing a name tag) told us that since we had an internet discounted rate we could only have rooms with one queen bed (why do they offer the option for king or 2 twins on discount sites that carry their hotel... other hotels offer specific bed types only if they are available), and that the rollaway was $30 extra per night...
oh and that since we wanted smoking rooms they were going to be in separate floors (the room next to mine was never assigned, the housekeeper told me so... and it had two beds!!! what was that all about? Wast the evil check in lady just trying to make our stay uncomfortable? If the hotel in such need of money they shouldn't cheat their discount customers with the (never disclosed until check in) charge for a rollaway, they should stop giving discounts). The room wasn't all that bad... it just was dated (in a 1970's Louis XIV house of ill repute style, oh, but with a wonderful view)... and the bathroom was small but I loved the intense water pressure. Turndown was done only on the first night... and even though I don't consider it a necessity I appreciate it, and miss it once it has been dangled in my face and then taken away... must be that discounted rate again or was the evil check in lady behind this too? Breakfast was good, and better priced than in tne next door Plaza or Ritz Carlton. We asked for our checkout to be extended for one hour and were continually refused, being told that they were sold out and could not give us a late checkout unless we payed half an extra day. If the hotel is sold out you can't give rooms... for free or for a fee, jeez this place really must be in a lot of debt. My only comfort was that some friends were staying next door at the Plaza and after comparing rooms ours was nicer and cheaper (though not by much). Anyway, Last year I stayed at the Helmsley Windsor, which is one block down from this hotel, so the location is just as good... and because it doesn't attempt to be a luxury hotel (no doorman, no restaurant, no turndown) checkout feels a lot better, you don't feel cheated or robbed or conned... oh, and the rooms at the Windsor have exactly the same decor as the Park Lane, only they are bigger! Stay there... really.
The location is probably the best part about this hotel. We found it to be safe and clean. Our room was rather spacious for a NYC hotel room; the mini fridge in the bathroom was a nice touch. Aside from that, it wasn't luxury, just a decent place to stay. My one complaint was that the tub drain was very clogged and so I was standing in about a foot of water after a 10-minute shower. Our stay was short enough such that I didn't bother actually complaining about it. For $144/night on Expedia, I think we got our money's worth. FYI: the convenient NR subway station next door is closed on the weekends. Not too far away is the F at 57th/7th.
A friend and I booked a discounted room on the internet and requested a twin room. Upon arrival we were given a double room. When I asked for this to be changed I was told there were no other twin rooms available in the whole hotel and that I could have a cot! The room could barely fit a double bed into let alone anything else! When I made further requests throughtout the week for a slightly larger room or to see if a twin had become available, I was not even given the courtesy of a reply back - 6 times in all!Then our turndown service was suspended because we were discounted customers and they had 'made a mistake' by doing it the first night!The concierge was unhelpful along with the bellboys who actually watched us struggle with out suitcases trying to get out of the door on our final day.Decor was over the top and clashed. Bathroom was jaded and peeling in places.All in all we were made to feel like second class citizens because we had booked via the internet.Oh - and we saw a mouse in the bar next to the restaurant.Great location but that is it - would definitely not recommend it - especially to those booking via dicounted internet sites!
Stayed at the Park Lane in January 2003. Very disappointing. It's overrated and deserves no more than 2 stars. The chair in the room was tatered and torn. The bathroom was old and there were stains on the sink. There was no cafe or coffee shop, so getting something light to eat meant going out in the freezing rain. The hotel had provided a free room upgrade coupon, but when I presented it at the front desk, they wouldn't honor it because I had a discount package. The staff was not at all helpful in getting a cab. I expect more for the price. I won't go back.
Not worth it
Our family stayed at the Helmsley Park Lane for one week in June 2003. Room with two double beds was spacious. Location was great. Our stay did not live up to the hotel's 4 star rating. The staff was helpful in getting a room change after the first night's stay to a non smoking room, which we had requested when we make reservations. The floor we were on the first night had a most unpleasant cigarette odor in the hall and also in our room. The staff for the most part was friendly and helpful. The concierge did not provide any useful information on how to obtain tickets to any of the plays or musicals. We checked our guide books of the city and were able to get half price on tickets to two great shows - Cabaret and Live (X) 3 (with Helen Hunt) Superb shows!!. Housekeeping was hit or miss - unmade room one day; no bath towels one night, no pillow cases on three pillows one night; no wash towels two nights (some wash towels were frayed when they were available). We had to call housekeeping each time to correct the situation. We will visit New York City again very soon, but we will stay at another hotel.
Idyllic walk in Central Park
Stayed at The Helmsley Park Lane - great position on SE corner of beautiful Central Park, idyllic walk just one minute away. Hotel deal from a discount website, saved $100 per night, very good value for a huge room with two Queen size beds and equally massive bathroom. Needed it as went with my daughter - so no rows over space! The very expensive breakfast overlooking the Park was worth it - once! Checking out took far too long -antiquated system, so give yourself a bit of time for that. Great place for brunch was Balthazar's in Tribeca - great service and food. The Guggenheim was a weird and wonderful experience if you're in to modern art. Going to NY again in July so watch this space!
Location Good, but that's it
We did not have a good time at the Helmsley Park Lane Hotel. The location was great, but that is about it. Checkout time was listed on the door as 1:00, but when I called to ask if we could checkout at 2:00 the front desk said checkout was now 12:00 (even though we were never told). Our 23rd floor "city view" was the roof of a building next door. There are no ice machines so we had to call room service each night for ice. The tiny refrigerator was in the bathroom and covered over with ice. The cords on the lighting fixtures were scarey. We were right next to the room service door which was continously slamming shut, and the elevador. The decor was cheap and the bellman was piling people's bags in the lobby with cable locks around them because they ran out of room in storage. Our friend's parents stayed at the Woldorf for $159 a night that their place was much better.
Great view, great location
I thought this was a great hotel. When i got there with my family, they by accidently put us in a smoking room, which is what we didnt ask for. We asked to be moved and theymoved us to a nicer room for the same price, which i thought was great. They were very friendly and helpful. We also had a great view of Central Park and we were a 1 minute walk away from 5th avenue. I will defeintley go back.
