Day Trip to Ancient, Ancient Greece

... Deep inside the citadel walls is an underground cistern. It is over 90 steps underground and completely pitch black. We made it about 25 steps down (with a small thumb beam that I carry around) before I got too scared and turned back. Andre kept going down a ways more with the light from his cell phone but eventually had to turn back because it just wasn’t enough light to see anything but the stairs directly beneath his feet. We spent a while just wandering ...

I hope everyone is excited to read about Athens because that was our last city and it was epic. Check back soon!

Day Trip

One of our day trips from Nafplio was to Epidavros. This is a small town that is home to the world's best-preserved ancient Greek theater and an ancient healing sanctuary.

The theater was built in the 4th century B.C. and has 56 rows of limestone seats that can seat up to 15,000 people. It’s especially famous for its amazing acoustics. You can stand on a small, circular piece of stone in ...

... are and how perfect the acoustics are. Standing at the center focal point of the theater, just the sound of your feet scuffing against the dirt rushes back against you from the empty rock seats amplified several times over. No problems hearing the actors during a play. If anything, you have to be careful what you do say.

Mostly all original rock, only a few upper edges where the ...

Oh, and then we came upon a great local beer, Mythos (also found in big, cold bottles). And of course, the now famous tuna-mac from our stay in Karkalou, is another dinner option. Ahh, something to work on :) Anyway, I ended spending the rest of the day with Lisa, which was great. We went to the beach, had a frappe, then wandered around the town. Later on we met up for drinks with one of the local men she had met at the fortress. The next day I started my journey back to Italy...

... pots and interesting things that all the museums seem to have. There was also a sphinx and 2500 year old fish scales. Terra cotta gutters still retain their original paint job, and I now know where the term "venereal diseases" comes from. Another important find in Corinth was an obvious Jewish menorah relief and an inscription containing the word synagogue. This just further shows that a synagogue did exist in Corinth. After we visited the ancient agora and ...

Day 72 - Glimmer of Hope

... Michael, a law student from Sydney. He's decided to stay on and find work here until he has to go back and finish his course in January. I wonder how he'll find working in Tolo, coming from the capital of Australia - not much difference there! I received an interesting email from a hostel in Athens inviting both Vida and I up for a chat about working for them. They have several positions vacant ...

Day 56 - Baby

Today has been rather uneventful. The most exciting thing was finding a tick on Baby's coat and pulling it out. Baby is the alsation puppy I've unofficially adopted. I had to make sure I got a good grip of it's body and pull the whole thing out and be careful not to leave it's head inside her which would probably become infected. I accidentally stood on a tick which must've fell of her body a few weeks ...
