    ... out here so Mike checked the morning paper. It turns out several wildfires were burning in the mountains nearby. His property was not at risk, but we would have to be careful about our drive. We checked our route by calling the Idaho Department of transportation and happily discovered that the route we wanted to take was still open. So we bid Mike adieu and promised to stay in touch.

The Indians fed and helped them recover which was just another example of how the expedition would never have succeeded without the help of Indians. The road to Weippe starts out up a steep series of switchbacks for a about 7 miles and then opens into open fields and only mild hills ...

    ... but we did cut it close.

    As we departed the hotel, the weather was looking GREAT. One thing was not. The nice folks at the hotel had placed two water bottles on the saddles of our bikes the day before. Since we didn’t ride, they sat there in the sun all day long. The water acted like a magnifying glass and left burn marks on the vinyl. The seats aren’t ruined but they look bad. Oh well, no time to deal with that now…
