Yet another instance of great friends starts my time at the lake. Upon hearing of my plans for this southern journey, Miss Heather Smith immediately rolled out that southern hospitality and invited me to stay at her family's lake house up at Lake Burton in Northeastern Georgia and enjoy some solitude. Thank you Heather! My few days here at Lake Burton, right up in the Chatahoochie National Forest, have been filled ...

... ended up staying at the shelter with another hiker who's been going about the same pace we have, Seeker). This was both a great and a terrible idea. When we finished, we were so glad we didn't have to do it the next day, but it was probably too early to be doing so many miles and our legs were really tired.

We really felt those 19 miles the next day. Since we did those extra miles, we were able to do a 13-mile day and reach ***** Creek Gap and the Top of Georgia Hostel in ...

We would have gone further but there was a section of trail right after Lance Creek that you can't camp ...

... it our base camp for a few days. Forest Hills Resort, 13 miles out of town is a large farm with individual log cabins that can be rented. Ours featured a hot tub, fire place, wrap-around porch and beautiful views of mountain forest. Horse riding, wagon trails and a intimate chapel are all perks of Forest Hills but we opted for the hiking trials instead. Breakfast is included but dinners can be reserved. Well worth saving ...

Jarred Gap to Neels Gap (31.7 miles)

Woke up to another dreary day but it was warm. Biggest climb of the day was Blood Mountain. It went up about 1,000 feet but it wasn't too terrible going up, but going down was a different story. The climb down into Neels Gap was full of slippery rocks that made me lose my footing a couple of times. I planned on hiking past Neels Gap, but there is ...
