... Philippines is 100 million(!) on islands covering 300,000 square kilometres. Up to 85 percent of Filipinos are Roman Catholic (93 percent Christian). I’m here at the same time that Pope Francis is visiting the Philippines. Millions are turning out to see him. Unfortunately, the approaching tropical storm forced the Pope to depart early from his visit to typhoon-damaged Tacloban. Much less regrettable, in the scheme of things, is that my dive trip ...

... water, you can find yourself watching one of the whale sharks and then turn around and another heading for you. They're about as threatening as a tube of toothpaste but its right to get out of they're way, you are in their territory after all. ... Inn - which was really nice, clean,
organised and with a free meal, WIFI, hot water and Cable TV. Pure
luxury after a rustic couple of weeks, just a shame about the smell
of sewers in the bathroom, sticky plastic mattress, ant invasion and
the view of the waste ground next door out of the window!
    We
soon headed out, walking the mile or so to the huge Ayala shopping
mall, greeted every few steps by friendly locals. Excited by seeing

Snorkelling with whale sharks & Sumilon Island

... from below. I started snapping what I could, as it was difficult with them primarily being underwater and all moving around, but it wasn’t long before the boatmen were telling us that there were 9 whale sharks all around us!! It’s hard to realise, because this was just such a surreal experience!! One girl quickly got back in her boat, because she found the size of them just a bit too intimidating.

Again, visitors are limited to ...
