... Winter Olympics in 2022! We happened to be in a restaurant eating dinner and the ubiquitous big TV was on, but this time it was perfect. We watched the live broadcast and everyone in the restaurant. Broke out in cheers! There were big celebrations (completely staged) at the Olympic park in Beijing and everyone was toasting "gam bay" which is Chinese for "cheers!"

They announced Beijing for the 2008 Olympics when I was in China ...

... which in places reminded me of termite hills from the Lion King. And me being me, I bought a new hat. This locations model was a cowboy hat with a bull on the front and it dawned on me that I was in a foreign land travelling, wearing a brown cowboy hat heading off into another adventure. I was the reincarnation of Indiana Jones (Even though I want to be a head teacher in the long term, I wouldn't say no to Hollywood if they came calling).

... course there were 9 of us. As we climbed, we started to wonder whether the car would take our weight (especially when below us was a 6,000ft+ drop below. But we reached the top in one piece.

Because of National Week and Tianmen Mountain being one of the main tourist destinations in the area, the place was rammed in places. Plus because we we white skinned, whenever we stopped for group photos the Chinese would always get push in to get photos with us ...

... t realize was that the steps up were more like an endless ladder. Mark and myself decided it would be funny to attempt to run up these steps. But, of course by the time we had reached the top of the 5 set (of about 9 flights) of steps, we were exhausted and resorted to crawling/ scrambling to the top. The view however was worth the climb and as a group we watched the sun set, looking forward to our first mountain climb the following day ...

... lot where a shuttle bus will take us to the midpoint station for the cable car. The road down is incredibly scenic, and actually runs from the bottom of the mountain, to the very top, with 99 switchback curves along the route. It was opened in 2005 and is quite a feat of engineering and construction, being essentially bolted on to the steep cliffs.
