Historical Traveler Reviews of Hawthorn Hotel & Suites - Calgary
OK for a one-night stopover
from A TripAdvisor Member
We stayed here for one night, after a flight from London. It was easy to drive to from the airport and the staff were friendly. The decoration of the room did look tired but there were two double bedrooms plus a kitchen so for a family, after a long journey it was ideal. The hotel also has a small shop that sells snack food which came in useful. Breakfast was okay, as was the dinner we had in the grill /bar. Overall, nothing outstanding but just what we needed at the time.

Upon arrival we were booked into the wrong room and told that the king size suites were all booked. Someone else was bumped to give us the room we had reserved. The hotel staff were friendly however, they told us that the parkade would be closed all weekend for renovations and we could park 2 1/2 blocks from the hotel in a parkade which we would have to pay extra for. We stayed for 5 nights as we had prepaid the room and on the 4th night our room key card had been deactivated and we had to get new cards. The hotel is older and the air conditioning leaked from the roof. There were stains on the roof from other leaks and the room was very dated. The room was large but the lighting was poor. It was nice to have the fridge, stove and microwave to use. The hotel was very busy and the elevators very slow. We were on floor 23 and always had to wait for a long time for an elevator. The computer room was nice with internet access however, while we were there they were doing upgrades so it was unavailable for part of the time. The hotel chose a poor time to do the parkade renovations and computer upgrades. It was the long weekend in July and they were very busy. They should have offered a temporary valet service for hotel guests so that guests didn't have to try and find alternate parking on the street or in other parkades...very inconvenient. When we checked out nobody asked how our stay was. The restaurant was convenient but the service very poor. The gift shop was handy and very courteous staff. The location of the hotel was good and easy to find although there are only 2 parking spots out front for loading and unloading baggage and we could not find a luggage cart and they do not appear to offer assistance with your bags. Overall, we found this to be a negative experience and we have never had this with any other hotel we have stayed in.
Fab

I was sorry to leave this place after 5 nights stay! Booked on the internet we had no idea what we were in for! They arranged a Sedan Service from the airport for us, luxury, and inexpensive. Altho the decor of the suite was not fabulous, there was nothing to complain about. Staff fell over themselves to be helpful, helped us plan excursions, recommended some fab tours (and cheap!) and came up to the room to assist with queries rather than deal with them downstairs or on phone. Breakfast (complimentary) was the best I had for 3 weeks in Alberta and BC tho the evening meals were a bit "fancy" for my taste. Nothing wrong with them tho. Taxi's and coach pick up points right outside the door, on site shop, laundry in basement, complimentary internet access on 6th floor and outdoor pool. I got to know a local inhabitant who used to live in the building in the 1960's when it was new. Built as an apartment building, that explains why the rooms are so huge, and ours had a lovely balcony overlooking the street and pool. Would definately stay here again and can't recommend it highly enough.
Ps, Find Charles in reception and get to know him, he's SO helpful, and don't forget to tip him cos whatever they are paying him, it isn't enough!!
Dirty, Dirty, Hotel

I have stayed in many hotels of all classes in North America and Europe and this is by far the dirtiest hotel I have had the unfortunate experience of staying in.
The first room I checked-in to was spacious although dated - this would have been fine had it been clean. However, upon undoing the sheets I discovered hairs and eyelashes all over them - obviously they had not been changed.
I was then put into a new room - this one was worst than the last. I can only assume the condition of the rooms not expecting guests are even more severely substandard than those that are. The phone in the bedroom did not work, the iron and ironing board were missing, and the lamp and living room lights were not functioning. Not to mention the dirty stove and toilet seat - oh and did I mention the half ripped paper towel in the kitchen?
Okay, on to the third room I checked-in to. This was just as poor as the last. There was marmalade all over the night table (or what I assumed to be marmalade). A putrid smell also filled the air (akin to sewage). The wall in the bedroom was paper thin and I could hear the movements and conversations of my next-door guests. Another problem in this room was the layout - a closet without lights and shelves (I am staying for a week so this matters to me), a bedroom with one lamp as its entire lighting, and a bathroom with just a sink and absolutely no counter space.
I ended going back to my original room (best of the worst) and having to change the sheets myself. If I was staying here on my on dime I would have been out of here after the second room - but I did not arrange these accomodations so I could not leave (I am here on business).
I do not recommend staying at this hotel! I have stayed at hotels in the same class and price range that are much nicer and cleaner. Look elsewhere for quality and good value. Also - this hotel had its name changed recently (although none of their signage or internal materials reflects this) to Five Downtown Calgary Suites. And when speaking to the kind gentlemen who constantly moved my bags he informed me the head of housekeeping was just fired this week.
Average Hotel

Stayed at the Hawthorne Hotel & Suites for 1 night in May. Found this hotel to be quite dirty and tired. First room we were given you could actually write your name in the dust on the TV. Complained to the girl at reception who apologised and moved us to another room. This was slightly cleaner and as we were so tired from our journey we accepted this. This hotel is ok if you just want a bed for the night and are on a budget. I would not stay at this hotel again.
Excellent buffet breakfast!

We stayed in July 2004 and after a long flight the hotel room was a welcome sight. Two double beds in seperate areas ,kithchen and bathroom with all the facilies you would need. The decor was a bit tatty and the bathroom although clean looked grotty. The complimentary breakfast was one of the best we had on our travels around Canada ,highly rated by my children! We ate in the restaurant and had a pleasant evening meal. Not to far to walk to anywhere and only a few blocks away from the c-station.
Weekend Jackhammers
from Okanagan
We stayed at this hotel on a Friday night having booked (2 nights) over the internet and read trip advisor reviews. Just a warning for the next several weekends - check by e-mail with the hotel to see if they are finished with the repairs to the attached parking lot - they have several jackhammers working from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on weekends and although they say it is quiet above the 10th floor, we were on the 14th and the noise was loud
and extremely annoying. Needless to say, we checked out after one night.
Other than that it was fine. Our stay was in late March 2005.
A great end to our holiday

We stayed in July 2004 - what a great place. We had a large family suite with a double bed in one room and two large single beds in the other (+ kitchen etc). Our booking included buffet breakfast - the hotel provided us with a voucher at check-in which we showed each morning. But watch out, breakfast gets very crowed and we had to wait for a table most mornings.
We ate in the hotel restaurant a few times (most restaurants in central Calgary will not admit children at any time due to a local by-law prohibiting children being in any smoking establishment). We were pleased to discover that the lunchtime menu (which is more family orientated) is also available in the evenings - but we weren't given this menu automatically, so just ask. Only criticism was that restaurant service was a bit on the slow side. We would definitely stay again.
WOW!

I couldn't believe how big these rooms are. Not to mention a full buffet breakfast was included in our rate, it was a nice break from all the dried out muffins and stuff that most hotels serve. The location was perfect and the staff rocked. They really make you feel at home.

We stayed in this hotel in June 2003. The rooms are large and clean.
Our room had two large beds one in a seperate room. It also had a large kitchen with all kitchen utensiles provided. Each bed had it's own television. There was also a table and chairs which you could use for dining. Our brochure said we would get free breakfasts but it was not on our travel documents. The hotel did provide a free breakfast but every time we had to explain the circumstances to the people on the front desk. There seemed to be no communication between the different shifts. No notes left. Once we were told we were going to get the breakfast I wish that was that and that we did not have to keep asking it was a bore every morning. Next time I will make sure the travel agent puts it on the document. The hotel is situated a short walk from the centre of Calgary and a short walk from restaurants. I would recommend this hotel to other people and stop here again.
