bahrain airport - just a change of plane

Out of the widow Bahrain looks like lots of dust with skyscrapers on. Inside it is a strange mix of Christmas decorations lots of tour groups who look like they might be going on pilgramage, 25k rolexes in duty free, mcdonalds, costa and free internet to keep us amused. We've got 2hrs to kill - body clocks already out of sink! Am going to try and learn some nepalese from a podcast.

Desert Bus Ride from Al Khobar(Dammam) to Jeddah

... br>
I got myself reserved on the 07:30 PM bus, well organized, and reached the SAPTCO Bus Station early only to be told that the bus was cancelled. I coudnt figure out what the attendant was trying to tell me but I was relieved to know that there was a bus at 10:00 PM so I waited, and got on that one.

The bus started making its slow cruise out of the city and I started getting images (although night) of the desert. Well, I have been on the outskirts of ...

Homeward bound via Bahrain

... to the west and Qatar to the east. We didn't know where it was until we were due to fly home via the island. It's interesting to note the road bridge (King Fahd Causeway) which links the two countries and is 17 miles long. Soon to be surpassed by the Bahrain to Qatar 'Friendship Bridge' currently under construction at 25 miles - it will be the longest bridge in the world.

Trapped in Yemenia Hell

... but needed to know the time of the Felix flight I could catch in Sana'a. She said there flights practically hourly, but I knew this was not true, knowing how few flights there are in Yemen (especially for Yemenia) and that there was a Felix flight to Seiyun slightly later than my Yemenia flight, which I would also miss (having been inadvertently been offered this flight by a Yemeni tour operator). She made a call to another Yemenia rep.

We ended up sitting there in the mostly ...

Five Random Observations

1. For weeks Michael and I have noticed cars that are spray-painted to look like they have been dune bashing and are thus covered with sand. We've had fun guessing what the reason might be for the -- dare I say redneck? -- decor. Since sand covers everything here, was it a "can't beat 'em, join 'em" mentality? Do they just think it looks good? It turns out the reason is a much more practical one. When one drives on one of the highways out of town ...

Feeling Hot, Hot, Hot!

... and his guests during race time). What a view! Watched the sun set from the balco. We then attended the Duran club for dinner. It was full of white people. How bizarre! Mostly pubs. It was almost like being in a pub in London really. Home to change and then we went shopping. I bought a beautiful bracelette which Kath bartered for. Yay for me! And an ...

Bab Al-Bahrain

... ago. The major construction projects have only begun here, but they are really trying to keep pace. They are building these twin towers that stand close to each other with gigantic fans in between them to save on energy costs. I headed out with a good idea of where I wanted to go. I cut through neighborhoods and various souqs, some more sightly then the others, although overall, much of the city is pretty trashy. For most travelers I would not ...

Doha Life and a bit of Crazyness in Bahrain !!

... had to wear for the remained of the day. We also discovered a face painter who was there to entertain the kids, US, so all got our faces painted we then continued our afternoon having a sign-along with the band man who was playing all our requests, what more could you want on your birthday? After leaving when all the food had been cleared away and the singer was sick of signing for us, we spent the rest of the afternoon lazing/sleeping by the pool. Then it was out on ...

Cruise 2005 part 5, Bahrain

... know is that no mater how he felt about the 9/11 attacks, I know for a fact that if he refused to sell them, his boss would fire him. I knew for a fact that he had nothing to do with the attacks. I did not consider him the enemy. The final thing he didn't know was that even though I am in the military, and ultimately our job is most often viewed as the obligation to take lives, MOST OF US view our individual job as protecting life. My aircraft does cool stuff, and I am proud to ...
